Arcadia finds itself in a star system with 1 class M planet ready for exploration

only at a very low power level, which makes me think it may be backup systems

no, it looks like they are weapons meant to fire on another part of the planet

yes, though there seems to be some vegetation, just a lot sparser and less diverse

It could very well be an automated defense network

Would that kind of system see a class 1 probe as a threat?

quite possibly, given that it doesn't seem very sophisticated

I'd rather have a probe or drone find out than one of us.

Does it have any active scanning?

i'm not sure if the scanning is active or passive from here

We can program some basic evasive maneuvering into a probe...should be able to outmaneuver a basic automated system.

Everything about this is odd. A planet with no other discernible sign of intelligence than a defensive network aimed somewhere else on the same planet

Intra-planetary warfare isn't exactly unusual, especially among prewarp civilizations...these poor bastards presumably wiped themselves out in the process.

Guess we are not the first. :: pause :: The probe is ready.

the radiation levels are higher than normal but should be within safe margins to be handled by exo-suits. O2 is 40% higher than standard class M, bacteriological is normal and there are biosignatures all around

I've never heard of someone keeping a whole planet as a wildlife preserve.

Are those radiation levels consistent with a radiological war some time ago? (edited)

yes. based on the half-life, I would say it was 130-150 years ago

Is there any evidence of continued intelligent activity on the planet aside from those automated systems?

not that i can see, but it's possible something exists that the scanners aren't picking up

We can examine the system and do a survey of the former civilization that lived here

::does some calculations, puts the zones on the display:: assuming the maximum radius of the weapon given projectile arcs and power levels, these three areas should be safe to beam down but still near the civilization

Agreed. Set up an away team. Additional security and enough science and engineering coverage to understand what we are dealing with
