Avatars

53 posts in this topic

There have been a number of questions regarding avatars here on the boards lately. I'm going to try to answer as many as I can remember off hand in this thread to help clear up any remaining issues. If you have any questions regarding Avatars, please post them in this topic. Any questions asked in other topics will not be answered and may be possibly deleted for being off-topic.

Question: I had an Avatar before we moved to the new board and now it's gone! Where did it go?

Answer: When I moved the Avatar database over from the old board, there were several images uploaded that were absolutely HUGE. Before the board would simply just resize the avatar, even though it's still loading an image that is sometimes up to half a megabyte in size. As you can imagine, this is not very effective. It's something that has been changed. So for the new system to work, I had to wipe all Avatars that were previously on the server.

Now when Avatars are uploaded, they're automatically resized upon upload. The board also now does a better job of enforcing size limits on the images. (See later question for more details.)

Also, if you do not have a copy of your Avatar still, and REALLY REALLY REALLY need it again... I can send it to you since I have an offline copy of all files that were on the old server.

Question: Can I still have an Avatar?

Answer: Absolutely! Here's what you do:

  • Click on the MY CONTROLS link found at the top, right hand side of the board.
  • Find the PERSONAL PROFILE section on the left hand side of the page.
  • Click on EDIT AVATAR SETTINGS.
  • Choose your Avatar. (You can upload an Avatar or browse the existing library to pick one.)
  • Click on the UPDATE AVATAR button when you are happy with your choice.

You will notice there is now an Avatar Gallary. This helps me organize Avatars in a little more efficient manner. You will notice there is a "Base Gallary", a "Trek Gallary", and a "Smiley Gallary". Given this is a Trek forum, I'm personally betting you will like the starter images I have placed in there for your use.

Question: Can I UPLOAD an Avatar?

Answer: Yes, you can. Follow the steps above until you get to the part asking to you choose your Avatar. Then find YOUR IMAGE AVATARS towards the bottom of the page. You will be able to link to an Avatar already uploaded somewhere online, or you can click on the BROWSE button and upload an Avatar to our server. All images must be less than 40k in size.

Question: What is the largest size Avatar I can have?

Answer: We are now limiting all Avatar sizes to 125x125 pixals. If you attempt to upload an image larger than that, the board will say you are not allowed to upload it. Try resizing the image, and then uploading it again.

Hey there. The boards look great. As I am getting adjusted to where items have been relocated, forgive me if I am asking a queation that has already been posted. I know I have read other people are hvaing a little trouble with the new boards.

Ok, so here's my question. I tried to update my profile and I received an error message. And when I tried to upload the same avitar I had before. Since I did my profile first, I don't think the problem is with the avitar. Any ideas or is this one of those areas still in flux?

Thank you for your help :D. And once again, the boards look great:)

In order to help you, I need to know exactly what error message you're getting. I was able to create a regular member account and modify it's profile without any problems. I was then able to select an avatar from the gallary, upload an avatar, and also link to one.

So if the image itself you are trying to upload is bigger than 125x125 in size, you would then get the error message. Also if it's bigger than 50k (or whatever is specified in the page there...) you will get an error message.

If you continue having problems, feel free to send me the image and I'll take a look at it.

Why would you want a tugboat as an avitar?

OK, does anyone know what that fin-looking thing on the top of the ship is or what it does?

And yes, it does look like it's fresh off the assembly line. Hasn't even been painted yet!

The Dorsal Module can be swapped in and out at Starbases. It can be ordnance storage or advanced sensors, etc., etc.

hehe...

Anyway...I have a question for future reference. I have a ton of Star trek pics, so what's the best way to resize them so that they fit just right?

Hola. Minor problem. I can't seem to see my own avitar on my own computer. I could see it fine at school, but here at home is another matter.

Thanks!

Sounds to me like a caching problem. I see the image just fine, so I know the image is there and displaying.

So try this from your computer:

  • Open up Internet Explorer
  • Click on TOOLS
  • Click on INTERNET OPTIONS
  • Find the TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES section
  • Clear all temp internet files and offline files
  • Reboot your computer.

After you do that, try viewing the boards again and see if that solves your problem.

I refuse to use this new confusing system, So I'll just switch between abra, and my cool pow, and steal Vanroy's when he's done with them.

Ok scratch the above, I finally got my Idol Snake back on the boards...which raises one more thing!

After I put him as my avatar, I tried uploading a different picture, but instead it just made a biger distorted version of my Snake avatar, what can I do!?!?

ok...heres the thing. As you can see, i had no problem putting up the avatar, you see the funny picture of the 5-speed Galaxy class with the text. Well, i don't like the text, the picture is funnier without it. I actually have a file of the picture with no text...and tried to upload it, but every time i do it shows up with the text. I even deleted the file with the yellow text in it!!! i have two different SIZES of the picture with no text, i upload them, update avatar and guess what, silly yellow text. Come on! any other picture i put in works fine. Help me out here, whats the story.

:P

I don't see any yellow text.

Oh, by the way, I think the gear shift would be more appropriate at the Helm station, not the Ops station. :P

#1 the yellow text isnt there because i fixed it and it changes allll the avatars when its fixed (increasing the stupid look of me)

#2 i think the picture got reversed, it used to be at helm

#3 it took forever to cut an Aston Martin Gearshift into a Federation Galaxy Class, so lets just say its a refit

also, you **** for blowing us up in Sovak's academy where you were testing stars...smokers.... :P
