Ensign Goad personal log - stardate 0212.19

Computer begin recording…

I reported for my first day of full duty after leaving Starbase 345 this morning. I was surprised to find the science office empty, it seems LtJg. Sivuk had to take leave today, and he left Ensign Travis Kroells in charge of science. I’m still getting to know the crew, so it is hard to get all the names straight. I contacted Ensign Kroells, who was on the bridge, he asked me to come to the bridge to help map the surface of a planet we are to establish a base on. It seems the Romulans used this planet as a base at one point, but abandoned it over 20 years ago. This was only the second time I had been on the bridge, the first being the day arrived on the Reaent. Scans of the planet’s surface didn’t turn up anything unusual, so Captain Michaels sent an away team down to investgate the abandoned base. They were to check to see if any of it is salvageable for use by the federation. Ensign Kroells was part of this team, leaving me as the only senior science officer on board and on duty, and I’m not really all that senior.

I stayed on the bridge for a while longer to complete the basic surface mapping, but was called away by Dr. Matthews as soon as I finished. It seems it was time for my first checkup after coming on board. Now I hadn’t met the doctor in person yet, although I had heard some pretty nasty rumors about her. Because of this I was a little nervous as I went to get my checkup, despite the fact that my experience has taught me that doctors are only there to help. It turns out I had nothing to be nervous about, Dr. Matthews is a very nice person, and a good doctor.

After my checkup I returned to the bridge to continue scans of the planet’s surface, as well as deeper in beyond the crust. The away team had found the base and were in the midst of exploring it. No great breakthroughs yet. So far scans have been all normal. There has been some small scanner interference when I try to scan deeper into the planet, although I expect it is from some element in the planet’s crust.. specifically tritoriam. I began conducting experiments on this new element while at the academy. So far no one has been able to scan through it without interference, although as I stated in my last log I am making some progress along these lines. I plan to find out for sure if we do have some tritoriam here, and hopefully run some of my experiments with the ships sensors. I will of course have to get Sivuk’s and then the Captain’s permission to do so.

Everyone on board has been cautious with this mission. The Romulans aren’t known to abandon places as quickly as they did this planet. There is a level of suspicion that we are being watched as I speak. The Captain has handled the whole thing calmly so far, if he has much suspicion recently he hasn’t shown it. I plan to stay up here on the bridge a while longer, at least until Sivuk gets back, and continue scanning for anything suspicious. Something about this just doesn’t smell right….
