All Quiet on the Western Front?

All Quiet on the Western Front?
Chirakis & D’Ka

There was stillness in the air of the captain’s quarters aboard USS Missouri.  Kirel stood beside her bondmate, Je’rit, as he stared into space, obviously reminiscing of a time long gone.

“Look to the west, Kh’éile,” he began, gently pointing in that direction, “toward the edge of the galaxy.”

She chuckled.  “It’s a big galaxy, Je’rit. Exactly where should I focus?”

“Focus on the two nebulae on the edge of the galaxy.  Terrans might say that they are to the west.   Look beyond them… or perhaps I should say between them.”

“Very well,” she began, somewhat skeptical.  “Look to the west... to the edge of the galaxy… and focus between two nebulae.”

“Yes.  And you should see Sindar.”

“Sindar,” she whispered.  “And you are allowed to tell me this?  To show me this because...?”

“You are my bondmate, Kh’éile.  It is my privilege.  It is my homeland.  And since we are bonded, it is also your homeland.”

“My homeland,” she whispered into silence and leaned against the windowsill. “Is there more I should know?”

“If you wish, Kh’éile.”

“Then continue.”

“Very well,” he nodded.  “When I was a child, my father taught me many things, especially the harmony of the spheres.” He chuckled.  “I remember pressing my nose to the window, listening, then asking,’ Father, what is the singing I hear?’ My father explained that it was what Terrans call the harmony or music of the spheres.”

“The music of the spheres,” said Kirel skeptically.  “Explain.”

“Look into the cosmos, Kirel.  There is never a time of silence within the universe.   Those who live within the universe as we know it seldom hear the music as the celestial bodies move through space.  However, those who study celestial bodies, those who listen carefully are more tuned to it as they study the cosmos. And yet, there is a species that has heard the sounds since birth.  We, the Sindarin.

“But we are not the only people who know of this, Kirel.  We must be cautious. We must be vigilant. One of these who knows and uses this sound is Ragor Tal.”
