Into the Mist

Into the Mist

USS Rodman, this is Starfleet Command Runabout Osprey, respond.”  Lt Cdr Morre called, paused, then repeated, “USS Rodman, Osprey, I say again, respond.”

Another pause.

USS Chi Song, this is Osprey.  Respond,”  he continued, then, “USS Agincourt, this is Osprey.  Respond.”

He sighed, clasping his hands behind his head to give his arms a good stretch as he leaned back from the console to stare at the ceiling and give his neck a good crack.  “Anything, Lieutenant?”

“Not so far, sir,” Lt Ling responded, checking her screen. “The only nebular chatter I get is… wait.  I think we have something, sir,” she said, her fingers sweeping the console to pass the information to Moore.

“Got it,” he said in a casual vein, not expecting anything new, but checking it out.  "USS Rodman, this is runabout Osprey.  I say again, respond,” he continued, then switched frequencies. "USS Chi Song, this is runabout Osprey.  Respond."

Nothing.

"Give me a full frequency scan, Lieutenant.  180 degree sweep. Mason. Fire up and give me everything you can see, hear, smell… whatever you can get. Ensign Gleason, mark our coordinates and send them to command.  We're moving in.

Lt Cdr Moore rested his forearms on the console to focus his energy while he waited for a response.  After sweeping through a grid for several days, he hoped there would be at least one sector that would point them toward Rodman, Chi Song, or Agincourt.   Lieutenant Ling sat next to him, continuing to sweep the sector grid.

“You’d think they would issue several runabouts to scan this quadrant,” quipped Moore.  “Case?  t’Jana?  Anything?” he asked, turning to the lieutenants behind him.

“Nothing yet, sir,” t’Jana responded, “but there is a very different signal coming from the nebular ring in sector 503.  And a cluster of different colors.  Sending it to your screen, sir.”

A jaw-dropping mist several parsecs away seemed to dance through that area, not at all like the nebulae they had seen before.

“Lieutenant Case?  Got any ideas?”

“Yes, sir.  There’s something out there.  My sensors aren’t picking it up, but if it’s changed to audio we might get something.”

“Send it over.”

On a whim, Moore reduced the frequencies 1.75 times to make areas of the nebula audible—not to humanoid ears, but to his console where he could remove the ordinary sound of a comet, of stars being born or dying, and quasars in the heart of a galaxy… and a few more.  But he’d never heard this.

“It sounds like…dancing?  Or an orchestra. Listen.” Moore attached his gear to the main system just enough to be heard without blaring into their ears.

“Whoa…. What does that mean, sir?” asked Case.

“Not sure, but let’s mark the area and move in that direction.”

A series of "aye, sir" moved them farther into the nebula towards the last coordinates of Rodman, Chi Song, and Agincourt, until strange crackles came through the wire.

“We're heading toward a nebular mist Commander," said Case.

"Coordinates?.

"Two seven zero mark one three five," sir.

Moore thought a moment, dropped a buoy into their area of the grid and sent their present coordinates to the closest beacon, Aegis’s 427P.

“Move us out, Lieutenant Ling.  Slowly.  If they’re caught in a nebula, we might be, too.”

“Moving out, sir.  Heading coordinates niner niner seven mark five two zero.”

"Engage."
