Excalibur, Season 8  |  The Darkness and the Thunder

The unprecedented wartime alliance of the Romulan Star Empire with other Alpha Quadrant powers, including their perennial enemy the Federation, against the Dominion, left in its wake a wellspring of less xenophobic sentiment throughout the Empire. As a result, rapid liberalization in the post-year wars took place under the Enuar (Forward) government. This included a temporary easing of tensions along the Neutral Zone, participation in multinational ventures such as Sky Harbour Aegis and the Camelot Project, and reforms to various civil aspects of Romulan life.

These rapid liberalizations, however,  have been met with an equally passionate push back from the more conservative elements of their society.  Following the death of the Enuar leader, Praetor Kohlav Avfad in 2384, the last four years have seen the steady rise of the nationalist Sihhus Lakhraem (Preserve, Defend) under the leadership of Proconsul Jalon Llhvae.

Underlying many of the platforms of the Sihhus Lakhraem is the deep-seated Romulan xenophobia and a growing distrust of even Romulan-inhabited border worlds, which were at the forefront of the Enuar movement. As the Sihhus Lakhraem have solidified their hold on the Senate, that distrust has become increasingly apparent with passage of several laws collectively known as the Preserver Acts directed at the frontier worlds, Romulan and alien alike. On the orders of Proconsul Llhvae and the Sihhus Lakhraem, rubberstamped by Praetor Gaher, greater numbers of Galae ships have been sent to patrol the border regions. Simultaneously, the Romulans have withdrawn their forces from areas of less value to the Homeworlds, reducing the numbers of exploratory craft and withdrawing from joint ventures like the Camelot Project in the Gamma Quadrant. The Neutral Zone, which had briefly been open to crossings if properly cleared by both sides, has once again become a no-man's land.

Meanwhile, following a close election, the Federation has celebrated former Federation Councilor Hajer Somak’s inauguration. Running as a moderate, Somak has promised to continue most of his predecessors policies regarding rebuilding and modernizing Starfleet. He also promised that his administration would continue to expand the Federation with new members, and to continue to press the Cardassian Union on efforts to become less dependent on Federation aid.

The blade that was broken has been reforged, and the new Luna-class Excalibur once again finds herself in the middle of perilous times. In Season 7: The Proud Tower, Pt. 1, much of our story involved the Paimpont region, where the Tamarn Empire and the Kaedwan Confederation felt the tensions between the Federation and Romulan governments rising.  As we begin Season 8: The Darkness and the Thunder,  we hope to engage you once again with a variety of themes and plots with faces old and new as the story unfolds.

Excalibur is arriving in the Elasian home system, where a fleet of around 400 vessels are being prepared to be escorted to Cardassian space. Several other Federation starships are already in orbit. The Excalibur has been assigned to inspect around 50 ships to assure that Federation weapon and defense systems have been removed in accordance to treaty obligations.

The Excalibur continues its assignment to assist with inspection of Elasian vessels that are to be sold to the Cardassian government. Science is conducting a survey of the planet's lush, largely untouched jungles, while Medical has just been given several patients from the USS Yalta. During the inspection, Engineering has found something, but what?

When we last left off, Excalibur had detected an explosion on the surface near the Federation embassy.  Meanwhile, while investigating an unusual device aboard an Elasian cruiser, Will and his engineering team triggered an EM pulse that disabled all technology in the area of the device.

During an inspection of one of the Elasian cruisers, the Engineering team found an unusual, alien device hidden away behind a false wall. In trying to remove it, they triggered an EMP that shorted out all electronic devices aboard. Elsewhere, there was an explosion on the surface near the Federation embassy. Asher is unharmed and returning to Excalibur. The Federation fleet has been put on alert.

Excalibur has been taken off the now much smaller escort duty and has instead been sent on a new mission. Swain has gathered senior staff (that's all y'all) in the Briefing Room to discuss their new orders. For record keeping, Excalibur has just departed the Elasian system but with no coordinates, yet.

Excalibur has received new orders to begin a mapping mission of the Sellaris Expanse, a relatively unexplored area of space on the edge of Federation space. We're currently en route to the Edrin Asteroid field where we'll be stopping at an independent trading outpost.

After a brief jaunt to an independent space station at the edge of the Sellaris Expanse, the crew has been recalled to the ship in preparation to depart on their mapping mission.  Engineering is awaiting the delivery of a mystery item that was purchased aboard the station.  Meanwhile, Medical awaits a set of files from station medical that might give them more information on the biology and medical hazards of the region.

The Excalibur remains docked at the independent station, where, luckily, a certain Science Officer didn't give away the whole ship. Resupply efforts and general leave continue as Excalibur prepares for a survey of the Sellaris Expanse.  Engineering has received their mysterious purchase but the packing material seems to be a bit of a biohazard.

Will and Reynolds have received treatment for their rashes, while Medical investigates the cause. Leary that his crew was going to sell the whole ship if they didn't leave soon, and also anxious to get to exploring, Swain ordered the Excalibur to head for a T-Tauri Star a few days away. We pick up underway to said star.

Excalibur is en route to a T-Tauri system near the Sheliak border in the Sellaris Expanse. Science and Operations have been working on a series of probes, several of which include *interesting* modifications. Engineering is still investigating the device they bought on the station, while medical is investigating the rash it gave them.

Exploration of the T-Tauri star system continues, as does poking around with the device in engineering. TBS is, like DST, not real and we pick up where we left off.

Excalibur continues to survey a t-tauri star on the edge of Sheliak space while Engineering hopes that their efforts to erect a containment field around the device they bought doesn't blow up in their faces, literally.

When we last left off, Engineering had acquired the services of a a hologram Tandaris, who apparently had managed to stick a "Clippy" program, but for "unconventionally engineering" in the Excalibur computer core. He suggested they "take the device to the spa." Whilst science came up with a novel theory to explain our grumpy T-Tauri star.

Excalibur continues to study a T-Tauri Star near Sheliak space, but a small alteration to the probes at Captain Swain's orders has started to reveal some unusual readings; meanwhile in Engineering Commander Tandaris "Clippy" Admiran in hologram form has returned to assist with a rather pesky device that resembles those we found aboard the Elasian ships. Also medical is exploring a mystery related to some uh, organic packing material.

When we last left our intrepid crew, they had managed to apparently disarm the device that was taking control of our ship and not a moment to soon as we were headed for Sheliak space. The device has gone into "diagnostic" mode for now and main power and computer control are returning to normal.

Having managed to regain control of the ships system's by putting the alien device into a diagnostics mode, the Excalibur has ended it's survey of the Sellaris Expanse prematurely and is now headed back to Federation space and the nearest starbase.

Excalibur is nearing Starbase 46(?) to begin untangling their computer core.  Science has been working on a secret project for Swain, while Medical has been dealing with everyone being on knife edge after the last week or so. There's even reports we might get shoreleave, but at the rate this crew goes well, I wouldn't book a ticket to Risa.
