Extenuating Circumstances

Extenuating Circumstances
Chirakis Kirel, Captain SI-5

“We need to consider all the facts, not just what happened on the Nei’rrh. Kenyon’s performance so far on the station has been exemplary. He shows both initiative and the ability to follow directions. This was his first away mission, and it was a stressful one.”       ~Commander Scott Coleridge

Having completed her first, and hopefully last document of reprimand, Kirel left her desk to stare out the window, beyond ships docking, tenders, fighters, and shuttles, and into the primal void that many called Chaos.  Chaos takes hold, and threatens to unravel thoughts and shift them into nightmares.  Chaos foments strife and leads her prey into the dark abyss of space.  The end result was often a long, lonely, and painful death.

Mr Kenyon’s situation involved chaos, but it did not prevail.  In their investigation, chaos turned into balance.  One end of the scale was positive, and the other end, negative.  Should one misstep in the face of chaos take precedence over the many positive steps he had taken?  His misstep was a heavy one that could have resulted in disaster, but it did not.  That said, did the sum of his positive actions balance against the one negative action?  The captain and the commander believed so, and so it would be.
