Assistant Medical Officer's Log

As Victor gets bored standing around, waiting for the go-ahead to go aboard the Galor class vessel, without noticing it himself, he begins moving in a slow fluid motion through the different Tai Chi positions. When Ensign Goldielocks giggles at him for doing so and he realizes what he’s doing, he sits back on his medical case with an embarrassed grin on his face. But then he begins to think back to the first time he was ever introduced to the martial arts…

--------------------------

He was wandering back to his dorm after another session of getting yelled at by his tutor for his lousy work quality so far. Filled up with expulsion threats and lines of dialogue saying his attitude was unacceptable, he was just in the mood for some sleep. As he strolled past the open doorway to the recreation room though, he saw one of his friends named Joey Chan, kicking the absolute hell out of a pile of sacks shaped like a man. Every move seemed to be strong enough to break bone. It shocked and thrilled Victor who had seen nothing like it. It wasn’t long before Joey noticed him.

“Hey Vic! Come on in!”

He walked in, his gaze completely transfixed on the sack-figure.

“What was that?”, he asked, his voice filled with awe.

“That?”, Joey answered whilst wiping the sweat off his brow with a towel. “Well that was just a little kung fu. You do know what kung fu is right?”

“Of course I know what Kung Fu is, I’ve seen my fair share of Bruce Lee and Sonny Chiba flicks, but ‘that’, that was just amazing. Why did you learn that?

“Well I’m from Hong Kong. And in Asia people found many ways of trying to create a strong link between the body and the mind. Kung fu is one of these methods. It can help find perfect control, balance and potentially inner-peace.

Victor just stared at him and raised an eyebrow and Joey realizing his bluff wasn’t fooling anybody smiled, “And also because it looks cool and it impresses chicks.”

“Thank you. Now could you teach me to do some of that?”

“Yeah alright, sure. I’m no master but I can get you started. All right, stand here. Put your legs a good distance apart like that. Now straighten your back. Good. Now punch”

Victor punched and hit the sack with all his power. It made a hard thump.

“Hey, not bad Vic. Do it again, except this time, higher.”

They continued these impromptu lessons and soon Victor became just as good if not better then Joey himself. He then started seeing a professional trainer and learnt not only Kung Fu but other martial arts as well. It was really the only thing that kept him going through the years at the academy letting him let off his steam to stay focused on his studies. It also did look pretty cool.

-------------------------------

Victor smiles at the happy memories. Right now that is something he lacks on the Aegis, a real living sparring partner. These days he can feel his skills slowly drifting away since with all the work piling up he’s finding less and less time to practice. This Cardassian ship problem for one thing, will not likely be finished off quickly. But even if he has to do it in the middle of the night, Victor will find time for his Kung Fu. He always has, he always will.
