A Questionable Matter

A Questionable Matter

“The Romulan Recon fleet has picked up something interesting,” Kirel said, thinking aloud.  “Many things are interesting,” she mused as she paged through the Romulan report, “so what would make this interesting enough to warrant taking  Aegean  on what could be an inconsequential mission?”

The report she held seemed endless, but she purposed to read it through, just in case.

“P-Kappa 198,” she muttered, as the door to her office opened and Security Training Officer Lt Damian Garand stepped in and stopped just inside, drawing her attention.

“Come in, Lieutenant.  Sit,” she said, putting the report aside, her finger indicating a chair on the other side of her desk.  Garand acknowledged the captain as he normally would.  She pressed the security button for privacy.

“Tell tell me what you know of the p-Kappa 198 system.”

Garand stopped short of the chair seat, then eased himself onto it as a quizzical frown swept into his expression. “The p-Kappa 198 system?  I… haven’t heard that name for… at least five years, Captain.  Orion chased a starship in, but it disappeared.  We’re not sure if it vanished, but we did lose contact with it.  Our science officer said that the system looked like it had a rogue star, so the captain moved us out.”

“Looked like it had a rogue star?”

“Yes, ma’am.  We really couldn’t really tell much of anything; there was too much interference.”  Garand’s head ticked to the side: an expression of curiosity and interest.  Kirel let it pass without comment.

“And you were officer of the watch at the time, correct?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“And did you want to pursue?”

“Yes, m’am.  But Captain Destula said things didn’t ‘feel right’ and ordered us out.”

Kirel raised a brow. “Captain Destula is telepathic?”

“Oh, no, ma’am.  She just has that gut feeling sometimes, and she’s usually right. As much as Starfleet wanted her to pursue, she pulled us out.”

“And for that, she lost her commission,” Kirel sighed, relaxing into her chair.

“Yes, ma’am.  The crew backed her up at the court martial, but it was still ‘willful disobedience’.”

“Lieutenant,” she began thoughtfully, “do you know why Starfleet ordered her to enter the system?”

“Well, not really, ma’am.  She never said specifically why they ordered it, but as far as I know, there was an unidentifiable signal coming from somewhere in that area. I wasn’t read into the mission, so I’m not sure about that; it was scuttlebutt.”

“Well, then.  Hypothetically speaking, if you were in command today, and you were ordered to enter the system, would you?”

His lips pursed as he straightened up.  She could tell he wanted to ask her why she was asking, but she also knew he would not.  Instead, he just stared.

“And from that expression, I know your answer. Thank you, Lieutenant.  Carry on.”
