“Food chain”…Kroells’s logs (log 47)

 

 

 

Travis stood on the bridge stunned.  In the last hour of his duty shift, every thing had changed…He was promoted to Lieutenant, Sivuk was to return to Vulcan, and most of all…he was the new chief of Sciences…  

 

To say it was a shock was to understate it.  Travis was thrilled beyond belief, except for the fact that something kept nagging in his mind…The way he got the new spot.

 

He can’t help but feel almost cheated out of it…If Sivuk hadn’t left on such urgent business, would he been promoted?  Was that the only reason Fred gave him his Lieutenant pips?  Because he was being bumped up to a department chief due to a seniority system?  He didn’t really know, but for now, what happens happens…and he thought that as long as he was in charge, he might as well keep doing the fine job Sivuk was already doing.

 

He just couldn’t shake the idea that he didn’t do anything to earn the spot…was he just the next line in the food chain?  They say that the black widow is a powerful predator, but it’s still someone else’s prey.  Had he just stolen Sivuk’s spot out from under him?  Was he doomed to the same fate?  

 

Thus is the fate of predator and prey
