Seiben

"SimulaTrial and Error

Seiben's fingers fly through the display panel in engineering, in the hopes of finding a successful means of propulsion and control for JERRI. (Jeffories tube Experimental Roving Robot Intellegence). But research on display panels are good, but Seiben wants to try it out in reality.  Seiben decides to head down to the holo-deck to try his ideas out.  Seiben books some time in Holo-deck 3, and heads out of Main engineering.  Checking the chrono on the panel, Seiben is off-duty anyways.. well in five munutes anyways.  Jaruq won't mind my early exit. Seiben thinks.  Seiben takes the turbolift down to Holodeck 3, and enters.  "Computer, Initiate Programme Seiben, Omega-4. " He said.  "Programme complete, enter when ready." It replied.  Seiben entered the holo-deck.  Inside was a model of main engineering and a Jeffories tube located near the warpcore.  Seiben found a box on the floor and opens it.  Inside contains JERRI.  A grey 1 metre long rectangular machine with two large protruding arms, JERRI resembles a large metal lobster. First, Seiben used an electro-magnetic motor.  "Computer, place an electro-magnetic motor in place of grav-field generator".  The Computer complied.  He turns on a panel which gets a continous video feed from the video camera built into JERRI.  Seiben then walked to a console and pressed some buttons activating the radio- sensor inside of JERRI and flew it into the Jeffories tube.  So far, so good Seiben thinks as JERRI progresses further into the Jeffories tube.  Howver, halfway into the Jeffories tube, Seiben heard alarms blare out.  Seiben looked at the monitor. Too late! Before Seiben could do anything, JERRI's electro-magnetic motor caused the IDF to overload.  A split second later, the Jeffories tube exploded instantly vapourises JERRI, and the warp core.  A second later, fire spread through the Jeffories tube, the Arcadia exploded from the inside out, killing everyone on board.  "Simulation, over" The computer said. Seiben coughed out some smoke and sat on the floor.  He put his hand to his forehead and sighed.  It shopuld have worked. Seiben thought.  I didn't factor in the Internal Dampening Field inside the Jeffories Tube. Seiben sat in the empty holodeck to think.  "Computer, re-open Seiben, Omega-4." The computer beeped in compliance.  The scene changed to Main Engineering again.  JERRI was located by the hatch leading into Jeffories tube.  "Hmm." Seiben remembered his research in engineering. "Computer, replace electro-magnetic motors with.. duct propellers.   They appeared.  The duct props powered by a traditional Starfleet motor as used in existing maintenanace bots, will not be a fire hazard. Seiben walked over to the  console to control JERRI.  It flew up into the Jeffories Tube at an altitute of 5 inches.  Seiben piloted JERRI straight into the tube. JERRI sucessfully went through the tube and reached the ladder.  Seiben then made JERRI fly upwards.  The props then moved to an upwards position and gained alititute, much like a 20th century helicopter.  Seiben smiled as JERRI progressed ever upwards before landing sucessfully four decks up.  Seiben then moved JERRI through the tube and found a smal bomb implanted there.  The LCD timer on the bomb indicated that Seiben had 5 minutes to diffuse the bomb.  Seiben extended the arms and opened the bomb's panel.  He then pressed a button.  The interchangable arm retracted and revealed two tweezer like arms.  He then tediously began to move towards the wires -- yellow, green, white, black and red. Which one? 1 minute remaining...  "Hmm.. cut the red, get ahead." He smiled.  Seiben moved the arm into the red wire to cut it.  20 seconds.. The arm gripped the red wire and Seiben pressed a button and moved a level forwards. 5...4...3...2...1... nothing!

It worked! Seiben breathed a sigh of relief. Seiben clenches his fists, and smiles.  He then turned JERRI around and flew it back to Engineering. "Yes, man. Yes." Seiben said. "Computer, save program and exit." Another beep, and engineering dissapeared.  Seiben exited out of engineering, and jotted his notes in his PADD.  The duct props gave JERRI the mobility it needs without endangering the ship, also making it easier to control.  The simplistic design and components inside made it extremely simple to use.  Seiben then exits the turbolit and heads to his quarters to shower and sleep.  A glance at his wrist chrono indicated that Seiben spent two hours in the holodeck. Before that, however Seiben entered enginering and into Jaruq's office.  The door was locked, so Seiben marked the PADD as "Urgent" and slipped the PADD into Jaruq's after-hours slot.  Jaruq could then read it in the morning. He exits and awhile later, reaches his quarters.  Hopefully, that's one errand down and two to go.  He still has to make plans for the Engineering Lounge, and the Marine Headquarters. But.. they can wait until next time.
