Sunday nights, hmmmm?

66 posts in this topic

So, it's the end of the weekend, but you don't want to start thinking about work or school just yet.  You want to have some fun, one last fling before the Monday morning blues set in.

Wouldn't it be great if there was an STSF Advanced sim on Sunday night?  That would be cool, that would be great, that would be...

OH!  Did I say that out loud???

Official Comment: STSF Administration can neither confirm nor deny that an Advanced Sim operating on Sunday evenings is in the works.   ;)

Sure it is, Fred. Anyway, I would like an Advanced sim, but before 10:00 CST, otherwise I won't make it. Also, with the new GM and all, will there be an Academy on Friday at 8:00 CST or is that still unclear?

The fact that we have a new GM does not have a bearing on a Friday night Academy.  It all depends on people's Real Life schedules.  We might get 15 new GMs and still not get a Friday Academy.  Y'never know.

I wonder what the logistics of a new advanced sim starting from scratch would be.  I am assuming that only currently serving GMs could be CO and XO but what about the rest of the players?  Standard procedure is that everyone is an Ensign upon joining a ship (even if they have been simming for years) but in this case would we really want everyone else, including the department chiefs, to have the same rank?

Logistically speaking, new simulations are no problem.  When the USS Reaent was re-launched a couple years ago, department chiefs started at the rank of Lieutenant, Junior grade, while the rest started at the rank of Ensign.  Rank doesn't really matter all that much...considering a department chief will always outrank an assistant, no matter what ranks both players hold.

Actually there are many instances where you don't need to be an ensign...captain's discretion, a ship-to-ship transfer, or a new adv simulation that already has an established crew.

For example. ::cough::

Not necessarily.  For a while the QoB's CMO was of lesser rank than one of the doctors in his department (He transfered into medical from another ship department.)  And it happens in the "real" Star Trek too.  Lt. Paris also doubled as a medic and worked under the EMH who had no rank at all.  There was also that episode when LaForge was an Ensign and Picard gave him Bridge command not knowing he, Riker, and Data would be away from the ship for an extended time.  LaForge successfully stood down a challenge to his authority from the CENG at the time who outranked him.

Or what about the situation I've been in many times as an Ensign on the Reaent and the QoB-Lakota?  I would find myself as the only officer on the Bridge, sometimes not having been formally given command, sometimes not even serving in a Bridge Officer position, and have to take command of the Bridge and pseudo-command of the ship.  I would give orders from the Bridge to department chiefs who were of higher rank than I was.  This follows a general rule that whoever has command of the bridge has it for a reason.  Did I have the authority to give department chiefs orders as an Ensign?  In that particular situation, yes.  Did they "respect mah authoritay" and obey?  Yes.  Did I outrank them?  Clearly not.

In these cases whoever has the Chief designation or Bridge command is in charge of that department or the ship, no matter who has more rank than who, but to say "a department chief will always outrank an assistant, no matter what ranks both players hold" just isn't true.

Rank is not the only source of command authority.  Let's not confuse the two.

What if a civilian was on the bridge...and no one else was there. Would that civilian then have command of the ship?

Now that I don't know.  I would guess Enginering would have to run the ship from there (assuming they knew there were only civilians on the bridge) but there hasn't been a Star Trek plot dealing with that yet.  But the more important question would be what is an unescorted civilian doing on the bridge.

Of course I am hopeful that Porthos will get his chance at command someday.   ;)

Hey there,

I believe the answer to that would be, technically, no. A civilian woudn't have any way to assume command. For example, what "user code" are they going to use to login to the helm station?

The same User Code they use to get into the holodeck and the lavatory ;)

::crosses legs and jumps up and down::  And, you know, that user code for the latrine is a pain when you have to go real bad!!

Since the topic has gone to lavatories..I find myself humorously quoting Atragon's first post. This is a classic LEAK.  And Fred's post in response to it is a classic administrative response to one.
