"Finding Peace"

Lieutenant Commander Garnoopy

Chief Engineer

Personal Log Stardate 50309.20

“Finding Peace”

Log Series Part IX of IX

Garnoopy up righted the overturned recliner in his living area. His quarters were a mess from the Manticore being tossed around. The coffee table's beautiful glass top that had been hand crafted lay shattered on his floor. Books from shelves lay in heaps upon the floor, lamps had fallen of tables and his desktop computer had somehow traveled across the room in one piece.

He sunk into the recliner and looked out the window for a moment. His quarters were fortunate to be pointing away from the station at this time. Garnoopy didn't want to see the massive space station structure directly out his window.

He winced at the pain that seared across his stomach as he leaned over the armrest. The wound that was there had apparently reopened. He picked up the med kit next to him and he pulled out a dermal regenerator. The amazingly small device could do many things, including repair the wounds that his body was littered with, but it could not heal the psychological pain he felt.

Time passed ever so slowly as he worked. The bruises one by one disappeared; the scars one by one were healed. Slowly his body was coming back together again.

Throughout the entire process Garnoopy didn't think one thing. His mind was vacant of all thoughts, including even the fact that he was using the dermal regenerator. It was as if his subconscious was doing everything and his conscious just sat there, as though it had its legs chopped off and was no longer capable of moving.

Maybe 5 minutes passed, maybe 10, perhaps even an hour went by. Garnoopy only realized that the wounds were healed when he looked over and noticed that he had set the dermal regenerator down and was no longer using it.

His eyes looked around his quarters and he had an urge to put things back the way they should be, back to normal. He wanted something solid in his life that was the way it was supposed to be.

He moved over to the pile of books at the bottom of the bookshelf and began to put them back. After a moment he realized that there was glass on the floor underneath the books. He frowned and shoved the remaining books to the side to see what had broken.

Clear shattered class lay around him and in the center was a silver picture frame. Garnoopy sucked in some air and quickly shoved more books aside. He picked up a book a few feet away and on the floor beneath it lay the photograph.

His eyes started at it, his body seeming to be paralyzed for a few moments. The picture had that affect. He had thrown it across the room quite some time ago and had never had time to clean it up. To much had happened to quickly.

His hand reached out, slightly shaky, and he picked up the picture. It was still the same beautiful scene that it had always been and he looked at it as emotions churned within him. He and his brother hung there, upside down, under that tree in the beautiful meadow.

Garnoopy stood and walked over to his bed where he sat down. He held the picture in his hand for a few moments and then smiled.

Carefully he leaned the picture up against the lamp on his nightstand and looked it for a moment, then stood. He moved over to a window and stared out at the stars which were as beautiful as ever.

Garnoopy stood there thinking, knowing his life would go on, knowing he’d somehow make it. His life may be difficult but he had people who were always there to help him, including himself.

Garnoopy gazed out the window, his brother’s words echoing in his mind, and he smiled gently, “I love you too.”

The End
