How was startrek made?

Oh, give me a break.  The Motion Picture sucked!  The only part that didn't put me to sleep was the Klingon ships in the beginning.  Nothing but slow, drawn-out camera shots, even slower dialogue, and uniforms even dorkier than TOS.

Hey there,

You can have your opinion but I have to disagree. If you watch the "Director's Cut" of TMP on DVD, I found the movie to be quite good. If the original had been given proper time for editing, then it's quite possible the movie would have done better.

Would it have been the best Star Trek movie ever made? Probably not. Is it the worst? Nope. The addition of the proper special effects mixed with proper editing drastically improve the overall flow of the movie. Furthermore, you understand it a little bit better by actually seeing V'Ger as it really is.

Also, something to add to Blurox's post. It's become known now that in 1977 pre-production had actually started on "Star Trek: Phase II". This new incarnation of Star Trek would feature all of the same characters except Mr. Spock, replaced by a full Vulcan. Character's name was Xon....here's a picture. This show was set to be the lead series for a new Paramount network. (Odd....isn't it?)

Sets were constructed, casting completed, etc. There are even online clips of test shots of the actors. The uniforms were still going to be TOS style, but the Enterprise itself was going to be redesigned. Several examples are as follows. If you click here you'll see the concept drawing for the bridge. Look familiar? The large "globe" in front of Kirk's chair was supposed to project holographic images. Next, here you see a concept drawing for spacedock. The new refitted Enterprise can be seen on the right. You can note from this picture the difference in the ship's design.

The Enterprise itself wasn't what we ended up seeing either. The model was about half built when it came down from Paramount they weren't going to make a new TV series. Instead, they were going to make a movie.

Sets were then modified to be viable for a larger "camera image." Other changes were made, most you can imagine. But in many respects, some of the designs stuck. For example, on the Enterprise bridge, ever notice those four "green" circle lights near the left/right of the viewer? Those are actually supposed to be engineering tool replicators, something that was going to be featured in the pilot of Star Trek: Phase II.

For reference, the Star Trek: Phase II model was eventually finished and seen as part of "fleets" in TNG...including "Best of Both Worlds" and "Unification". At TrekMania they have a copy of the rendered ship:

apollo_sm.jpg.

If you click here they have an actual screen shot from the episode showing the model. I've also seen pictures of the half completed model itself. The forward drive section appeared to be similiar to what we saw in TMP, but as you can see the aft section of it was a completely new design.

Hey there,

Until the day I die, I will always believe the red Star Trek TOS movie era uniforms were the best ever made. I just don't see a way to compare any uniform before or since to them.

As for the worst, forget TOS. I look at first season TNG...with the men wearing the skirts.  ;)

At least the Romulan uniforms look like uniforms.  Starfleet's TNG uniforms look like pajamas.  On the QoB I always pretend I am wearing one of the new ones with the all black, grey shoulders, etc. even though the ship was lost in the Delta Quadrant before those uniforms even came out.

Plus as an engineer I have one of the 2-piece ones.  With pockets!   ;)

Gene Roddenberry must of thought that the skirts would be non-discriminatory material. But he thought wrong ::everyone becomes shocked and appaled:: and it came out of service in S2.

Hey, remember the stink that the I Love Lucy show raised because Lucy and Desi's separate beds were *GASP* less than 3 feet apart!!  For some reason mixed marriages were OK but showing a husband and wife sleeping in the same room but in separate beds was controversial?

Societies norms change every so often, and there is no predicting the direction.  But the short skirts of the TOS were accepted without question on TV because they were accepted without question by society at the time.  But the skirts worn by men, such as the early TNG and the dress uniforms, just look out of place.  Roddenbury may indeed have been trying to say "Be open minded about this stuff", but all it did was give us something to poke fun at.

I didnt like the old uniforms from TOS. They were plain. Just red, blue or yellow top and pants. Except now with the newer ones that have the gray vest with the other uniform under them. Those are the new hip hop unifroms of the 24th century.

This has nothing to do with this topic but what is that little IB thing next to the envelope thing?

In the beginning, uniforms were made for the sole purpose of making it easier for kirk to attract blue women. Then later the old red ones were more like military uniforms which is more what starfleet represented at that time. In TNG it became a much happier friendlier type of organisation so they changed the clothes again, but in DS9 and first contact things got a bit more badass again so alterations were made to make them look stronger and meaner.

True very true. Tougher and meaner is right about those new uniforms. But now since the TNG and all the other ones are gone we wont be able to see those again.

I must also state the new ones look better then all the old ones so I guess I'm just attracted to bad things ;) :)
