"A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes"

Log Series Part VIII

It was a warm cozy night that held no clouds in its grasp. The stars shown brightly down which blanketed the soft grassy earth with a gentle light. Slick lay on his back staring with his mind obviously not within this world. His strong teenage body was clothed in simple jeans and a t-shirt. His feet loved the feel of the grass and refused to be locked away in a pair of socks and shoes.

Directly next to Slick lay a figure whom was identical. The same youthful strong appearance also stared up at the stars with the same lost expression.

Moments passed which then turned into minutes. Minutes passed by and not a word was said, the two teens laid while staring up at the heavens above. It seemed to the mind that eons upon eons had gone by but neither of the two cared. They were not uncomfortable by the silence; their feelings about each other to close.

With no thought before saying it, not even the realization that he was going to say something, Slick ever so softly spoke, "I've missed you."

"I know, I've missed you too,” Jolt responded with instantly but just as softly.

The two then just lay there as moments passed again, not afraid, not scared, not worried, just enjoying the moments of time that they got to live in together.

"We knew it could happen” the words flowed out of Slick's mouth with an ever so delicate touch. They moved outwards quietly almost afraid to break the peace that blanketed the air around them. "Our careers are not the safest ones."

"Death is something every Starfleet family has to worry about, by some means or another,” Jolt said, the knowing what he spoke of was the truth.

Slick blinked and bit his lip, emotions beginning to stir within him, "But you died. You left me."

"No" Jolt said a little more firmly. "I can never leave you."

Jolt sat up and set his hand on Slick's shoulder, "I have a bond with you that cannot be broken. It doesn't matter how far we are apart or what has happened. I am with you all the time as you are with me."

"It's not the same" Slick said, and rolled onto his side with his back to Jolt. "I can't see you anymore, I can't even send you subspace communications!"

Tears began to flow from Slick's eyes, the pain and grief of the loss of the twin who sat right behind him eating away at his heart. "You're gone, and I want you back."

"Slick, I'll see you again" Jolt said, trying to be comforting, and put his hand back on Slick's shoulder.  "You know as well as I do. We will be together again."

Slick rolled over and looked at Jolt through the blur of tears that fell from his eyes. In front of him sat his brother. His twin. The person who had been the closest one to him.

"Why did you go?" Slick demanded with more anger than was truly within him.

"I haven't gone anywhere. I'm still with you. I'm apart of you. You have to realize that, Slick" Jolt said, looking straight into the eyes of his twin. "Your life is much more difficult than you admit to anyone. You live on the edge of danger every day, you deal with emotions that some people can't even comprehend. You have to be strong, Slick. You have to stay together and keep your life moving. You've just been through two terrible ordeals. I'm with you all through them but you have to help yourself too. I can only do so much for you."

Slick continued to let the tears flow, "But..."

Jolt cut him off, "No 'buts' Slick. You will survive. You will go on. I will be with you for the entire length of your path in life. Always remember that."

Through the blurring tears Slick saw the look in Jolt’s eyes. The look that shown the love and caring of a twin, the look that sent the love directly into Slick’s heart. Slick knew that his brother would always be there for him, through thick and thin, whether he could be there physically or not.

Softly Slick said "I know you'll always be there for me no matter where you are."

Jolt smiled and wrapped his arms around Slick in a tight embrace. After a moment Slick responded and wrapped his arms around Jolt. The two lay there in the grass in their tight embrace.

Moments passed which seem to turn into minutes; minutes passed which seemed to turn into years. After an eternity of time, which neither brother wanted to end, they separated and slowly lay back down into the grass. The stars still shown above them, inviting them to explore, to live their lives. But for now they just looked up at them, leaving the exploring to another day.

Just below a whisper in the saddest of tones Slick said, "I wish I could see you one more time."

Barely audibly Jolt said, "Just look into your heart and you'll see me."
