Numbers and Precision

37 posts in this topic
Star trek is all about putting reality away for an hour or two, and it's good to do so every now and then.

Amen!  (And with popcorn).

And as I say often... It's Star Trek, not Shakespeare.  ;)

::thwaps Huff:: What do you mean!?  Stop messing with my own little corner of reality..or lack of it.

Bah...not Shakesphere...next you'll tell me that Earth is round.

Bah...not Shakesphere...next you'll tell me that Earth is round.

Actually it's oval.  It's wider at the equator than from pole to pole because of the influence of the sun and moon on the water (and to a lesser extent the land).

And yes this does relate to the accuracy vs precision debate, just not about numbers.

actually it is neither it is an irregular shape because of several gravitational forces at certain areas arond the globe cause the earth to be an irregular shape ;)

The Earth is an oblate spheroid.  Now there's a braincell I haven't managed to kill and should.

It is a square. Sure all the pictures say it's a sphere, but NASA doesn't always tell the truth, do they? ::burns NASA's pictures to the ground::

Well, not exactly.  There is a basic confusion going on here between "accuracy" and "precision."

When I was told in analytical chemistry that we would hvae to be able to know the difference in presicion and accuracy in everyday life, not in a million years did I think it included simming.

And if you real want to get more technical.  The Earth is just one massive fractal. :D

When I was told in analytical chemistry

I much prefer intuitive chemistry.

"Let's just throw this stuff together, light a fire, and see what happens."
