USS Challenger 03.30.2014

Cptn Ja'Lale -> All right, let's get started..

Cptn Ja'Lale -> Last week, the Challenger team returned to the Challenger from the surface to analyse the samples taken from the surface. Results came back positive for high amounts of radiation in the area and that the area will not be habitable for at least the next 100-200 years or so.

Cptn Ja'Lale -> TBS was 1 hr.

Cptn Ja'Lale -> Questions?

Cptn Ja'Lale -> BEGIN SIM

Cptn Ja'Lale -> BEGIN SIM

Cptn Ja'Lale -> BEGIN SIM

John Randall -> ::at his station in engineering, supervising the crew pending the return of the chief::

Cassie Granger -> ::on the bridge::

Cptn Ja'Lale -> ::on the bridge as well::

H.G. Reed -> :: At her station, researching radiation irradiation techniques. ::

Derrick Sabin -> ::on the bridge at the sci station::

Hunter Matheson -> ::not sure but think at helm?::

Cptn Ja'Lale -> ::looking over the sample readings he was sent::

EddieFreeman -> ::entering engineering::

Gretchen Hanson -> ::in sick bay::

Cptn Ja'Lale -> (yes, most likely at helm)

Hunter Matheson -> ::at helm::

Dvokr chim Hok -> :: Back on the comm board ::

Cassie Granger -> ::in hover mode, checking data, absorbing info from CMTAC::

John Randall -> ::reviewing reports and requests, funneling them through to the chief's computer in his office::

Hunter Matheson -> ::is hovered over::

Dyan Sylvanis -> ::On MARDET.::

Dvokr chim Hok -> :: Either concentrating or frantically isolation communications, Hok looked busy ::

Cptn Ja'Lale -> Interesting findings so far. We'll need to forward ways to dispell or perhaps, harness the radiation to the Klingons and to Starfleet. ::rubs chin""

H.G. Reed -> :: Ignores the hovering, continues her research. ::

Cassie Granger -> ::hearing the captain:: Harness the radiation?

EddieFreeman -> ::entering the main engineering bay, sitting at a station near Randall:: I'm back.

Cassie Granger -> ::moves towards Sabin::

Derrick Sabin -> ::also skeptical about harnessing what is essentially planetary radiation::

Cptn Ja'Lale -> Perhaps... one of you suggested it in a report harnessing the radioactive energy into electricity? Or was I mistaken?

Hunter Matheson -> ::just the driver::

Dvokr chim Hok -> :: Thinks the scale of radiation damage is too great to clean up in short order. The time scale was depressing ::

John Randall -> ::looks up at the sound of Freeman's voice:: Welcome back, Chief. I see you're not lit up like a Christmas light, so the radiation must not have been too bad. Reports and updates have been sent to your computer. We're just doing the routine stuff.

Cassie Granger -> ::turns to Sabin:: Thoughts on that one?

Derrick Sabin -> Well, in theory, it could be done. Old earth used radioactive elements to heat steam turbines, but on a much smaller scale.

Hunter Matheson -> ::checks the orbit::

Derrick Sabin -> I don't think the Klingons want to enclose their entire planet to create a boiler.

EddieFreeman -> I don't feel particularly irradiated, true. Not that I would know what that felt like. ::pulling reports from his office computer to the station he's already at::

Dyan Sylvanis -> ((Sorry have to go for the night guys. I'll see you all in a couple weeks, cause I won't be here next week.))

Cptn Ja'Lale -> Nor do I.. luckily it is just a small isolated part of the planet that's affected.

H.G. Reed -> :: Glances up quickly at Hunter's movement. ::

Hunter Matheson -> ::double-take::what?:::

Hunter Matheson -> Just avoiding debris.

H.G. Reed -> Sorry, bad habit.

John Randall -> Radiation poisoning doesn't exactly feel good, sir; I can attest to that from a couple of weeks ago at that nebula.

Derrick Sabin -> Even so, sir, we're talking about a continent sized facility.

Hunter Matheson -> ::shrug:: Wouldn't want to hit something, especially if it's hot.

Cptn Ja'Lale -> Hmm. Indeed.. any other options?

Cassie Granger -> ::looks around, calling for ideas::

H.G. Reed -> Not your fault. I startle easily at sudden movements.

H.G. Reed -> :: Looks at Cassie :: Should we consider attempting irradiation?

Cassie Granger -> ::looking from Reed to Sabin::

Cassie Granger -> How large an area are we talking about? How large is the continent?

Derrick Sabin -> ::looking like a puppy about to be whipped::: No offense to our collective creativity, but is finding a solution really OUR problem?

John Randall -> Chief, I'm glad you're here; I need to pop up to the bridge to check the status of the shields. The radiation levels outside the ship are slightly elevated, I want to make sure the shields are handling it properly.

Cassie Granger -> ::looks to Ja'Lale::

EddieFreeman -> ::looking up to Randall:: All right. Tell me if you need me to do anything on my end.

Cptn Ja'Lale -> Not in the long term, it'll up to the Klingons to decide ultimately what they will do.. but they did ask for our assistance and we owe it to them to come up with a few options for them.

John Randall -> ::nods as he stands:: Will do, sir. ::heads for the engineering door::

Dvokr chim Hok -> :: Shakes his head, comms are touchy ::

John Randall -> ::heads out into the corridor, and makes for the turbolift; steps in:: Bridge.

Derrick Sabin -> I'm just saying, sir, that the Federation must have someone who specializes in this sort of thing, not just the admittedly brilliant crew of a starship.

Cptn Ja'Lale -> Corps of Engineers, or Science?

Derrick Sabin -> It'll take both, sir. Science to come up with a plan and the engineers to put it together.

Hunter Matheson -> ::total focus on helm::

John Randall -> ::the lift arrives, and Randall steps out onto the bridge; nods at a couple of bridge crew, and walks over to the engineering station::

Derrick Sabin -> I mean the only reference to a project of this scale is in an Asimov novel. The planet Trantor was totally encased in steel.

Cassie Granger -> ::notes Randall's entrance::

Cptn Ja'Lale -> ::nods:: I doubt the Klingons would want do that route. ::nods at Randall::

Cptn Ja'Lale -> Well, it can't hurt to get their opinion in the matter.

H.G. Reed -> :: Listening quietly, wondering who they will call for a consult. ::

Cassie Granger -> What's the bottom line on your scans, Ensign Sabin?

John Randall -> ::catches the captain's eye, and nods back at him; enters his passcode into the computer, and accesses the shields numbers::

Cassie Granger -> Doable, not doable, habitable or not?

Cassie Granger -> Any areas of the planet habitable, or are they all in danger?

Derrick Sabin -> ::turns to Granger::: Too many variables. What do the Klingons want to do? What's their time frame? The easiest is just to wait it out and let the area cool naturally.

John Randall -> ::taps the comm button at the engineering station:: +Eng+ Randall to Freeman.

EddieFreeman -> +Randall+ Freeman here. What do you need?

John Randall -> +Freeman+ Chief, can you reroute some power to the port side plasma inducers? The radiation level seems to be the strongest there, and I need to shore up the port side shields.

Cassie Granger -> Unfortunately, our mission parameters indicate that the Klingons do not have the capability of accomplishing this on their own. That's why they called in the Federation.

Cassie Granger -> Over mining created the explosion of Praxis and their military expenditures exceeded their ability to repair the damage.

Derrick Sabin -> "Not having the capability" implies they want to do something in the short term, yes?

Cptn Ja'Lale -> ::listens quietly, taking it all in::

Cassie Granger -> It could. ::turns to the captain::

EddieFreeman -> +Randall+ Will do. I'll reroute some of the excess, we'll see how that does it - start hitting non-essentials, if that doesn't work. ::rerouting power, and checking on the inducers while he's at it::

Derrick Sabin -> But they don't have the resources...meaning they either want something on the cheap or they want the Federation to pay for it?

Cassie Granger -> ::moves on:: on the other side of the coin is the possibility of a strong agreement with the Klingon empire. They clearly do not have the resources; that's been verified.

John Randall -> +Freeman+ Thanks, Chief. Will advise you shortly on the status of the shields. Randall out. ::begins making adjustments on the panel::

Derrick Sabin -> ::turns to Ja'Lale:: So this is going to be political? We're going to offer them help in exchange for...what? Some kind of treaty?

Cptn Ja'Lale -> Yes.. the easiest solution as you said, would be to quarantine the area.

H.G. Reed -> :: Quietly :: But how do we insure the quarantine remains in effect for the appropriate amount of time?

EddieFreeman -> ::watches plasma inducer numbers as the power reroutes::

Dvokr chim Hok -> :: from the comm station :: It's what I would do..

Cptn Ja'Lale -> I'm not a diplomat, but I would imagine if I were, then yes, some kind of treaty or ease in some restrictions along the neutral zone..

Cptn Ja'Lale -> The Klingons should be able to at least safeguard the area and set up a quarantine zone.

Derrick Sabin -> Well, if we're going to go on the premise of cost is no object, then I'd recommend plating over the entire continent. Plumb it up to run a few thousand steam boilers and produce electrical energy for the 200 years it's going to take to cool.

Cassie Granger -> Would the benefits in energy justify the projected cost of the project?

Derrick Sabin -> ::back to Granger:: No

John Randall -> ::overhearing the conversation on the bridge, turns to try to catch the eye of Granger as an idea pops into his head, but then decides it's none of his business, and turns back to his panel::

Cassie Granger -> ::deep breath:: Then it's allowing it to cool down instead, plus evacuation. Mr. Randall, you have something to say?

John Randall -> ::turns back from his panel:: I couldn't help overhearing, Captain Granger, and we have a thing on Centaurus where we use a hyperpolarized field to block out one of our suns to give us a nightfall across the planet. I believe that system could be tweaked to help screen out some of the radiation hitting the planet.

Cassie Granger -> ::looks to Ja'Lale::

Cptn Ja'Lale -> ::rubs chin:: An interesting solution. Could it help lower the radiation levels on the planet?

John Randall -> ::nods thoughtfully:: It would probably take a few years, maybe a decade or two, but I believe it could, sir.

Derrick Sabin -> I'm confused sir. I was under the impression that the radation existed on Kronos as a result of the explosion. That the radioactivity was already in the ground, not coming in from space.

Cassie Granger -> My understanding as well. But we do have radiation in the belt of debris that surrounds the planet.

Derrick Sabin -> Then we're back to needed to shield the entire planet

John Randall -> ::turns back to his panel, and makes adjustments::

Derrick Sabin -> *needing

John Randall -> +Freeman+ Randall to Freeman.

Cptn Ja'Lale -> Hm. So is that your recommendation then? Wait it out, let it cool and set up a quarantine zone around the area? Seems to be like the easiest solution as well, to be honest.

EddieFreeman -> +Randall+ Freeman here. What's up?

H.G. Reed -> :: Listening to the conversation and wondering whether or not they should even be involved in this mess. ::

Cptn Ja'Lale -> I don't really think the Klingons or the Federations would go for shielding the planet or setting up a massive boiler thing.

Cassie Granger -> Agreed, Captain.

Derrick Sabin -> ::nodding in agreement::

Cassie Granger -> But if I may...?

Cptn Ja'Lale -> Of course.

Cptn Ja'Lale -> Of course.

Cassie Granger -> To answer your question, Mr. Sabin, the situation is always political. Chancellor Gorkon was assassinated because he brokered peace with the Federation. Chancellor Azebetur is now asking for assistance and the chances that the Federation could form an alliance are very good. It’s to the Federation's advantage to render any and all aid if possible.

Cassie Granger -> If it is not possible, then we need to report it as such, but in the best possible light.

Derrick Sabin -> I understand that position. But even politics has to give way to reason and practicality.

Cassie Granger -> And I agree.

John Randall -> +Freeman+ Shields at 100% on the port side, sir. Thanks for rerouting the power, it did the trick. I'm finishing up here, and will return in about ten minutes. Randall out.

EddieFreeman -> ::nodding, and turning back to his console to examine the inducers:: Inducers are holding up...looks good. Gotta check it again later, see how they're handling the increased flow...:making a mental note as he moves on to the next task::

Cptn Ja'Lale -> I agree as well. The Klingons I'm sure appreciate our assistance so far.

Cptn Ja'Lale -> But yes.. if there is no practical way to contain or dispel the radiation, then well, what can we do?

Derrick Sabin -> Simply telling the Klingons to "wait it out" isn't going to endear them to us. On the other hand, well there isn't really much of another hand. It's just too costly and impractical to do much else.

John Randall -> ::makes some final adjustments on his panel, logs off, and turns to head to the turbolift::

Cassie Granger -> Captain, I suggest we report the findings, give our recommendations, and allow the political chips to fall where they may.

Cptn Ja'Lale -> ::Nods:: Agreed. Our relations are already icy, let's just hope this doesn't cool things further.

John Randall -> ::nods at a couple of the bridge crew, and strides to the turbolift, stepping in:: Deck 12.

Derrick Sabin -> ::thinks, 'it's not like it was our fault they blew up Praxis'....but it would be just like to Klingons to think that way::

Cptn Ja'Lale -> ::Looks to Hok:: PLease forward our report to Starfleet and the Klingons, that there isn't much we can do practically to contain, disperse or harness the radiation. Recommend a full quarantine set up around the affected area for 200 years to allow the radiation to cool.

Dvokr chim Hok -> Aye. :: setting up the report :: We should be able to map out safe areas and monitor the levels...

John Randall -> ::arrives at the deck, and exits the lift, going along the corridor to engineering; strides in, and heads for the main console, nodding to Freeman::

EddieFreeman -> ::waves to Randall as he enters::

Cptn Ja'Lale -> Forward those to the Klingons as well when you get them. We can at least help them in that matter.

John Randall -> ::resumes his normal duties::

Dvokr chim Hok -> :: Thinks it's too bad one cannot create an artificial black hole... ::

Cptn Ja'Lale -> PAUSE SIM

Cptn Ja'Lale -> PAUSE SIM

Cptn Ja'Lale -> PAUSE SIM

Cptn Ja'Lale -> OK... great job everyone. Great ideas, too bad none of them fall within the scope of feasibility. Any questions?

Cptn Ja'Lale -> TBS will be 6 hours

John Randall -> Still in orbit, or in transit?

Cptn Ja'Lale -> Still in orbit, but I'd imagine we'd be leaving the planet soon. Not much else we can do now
