Overworked (Part 1)

Assistant Medical Officer's Log

------------------------------------------

Victor sat at his desk in sickbay. He found that it was the safest place to hide until the Daphne/Helen situation cooled down. And since he was there anyway he decided to take another look at this new crewmember Brex’s condition. His copper levels had dropped quite a bit. To many interstellar races including Vulcans and Bolians, this was not a good thing. Low Copper levels could result in any number of symptoms, ranging to something like the flu to random fainting. Proper tests had not been performed on low copper amounts in Bolians because it happened so rarely and when it did it started at birth, but Brex had been fine at his last check-up. This was puzzlement. Though Brex would be back to normal once he started taking his prescription, the cause of the drop itself was still a mystery, and though his patient would be fine, doctors don’t like mysteries. What didn’t help was that administration was taking their time sending over a proper official history of Brex, medical or professional.

Victor looked to the medical database for help.

“Computer, list all substances known to create a sharp decrease in a living being’s copper levels”

A long list slid down the screen. Victor let out an expletive.

“Computer can you list all of the substances from this list that are known to not be present on this station?”

The list became a lot shorter, narrowed down to just a precious few.

“Interesting. Computer are there any members of the science department available at this moment in time?”

“None, all are occupied or off duty”

“Damn” Victor realised that this was the so-called night watch. He’d been up a while. Well all he could do was leave a message and wait for someone to answer back. He dictated to the computer.

“Dear Mr. Gabrel Zog,

I would like to know if one of your assistants or yourself could please find out if any of the substances on the list I’m sending you can be found anywhere near the Sky Harbor Aegis. I would be most appreciative if you could do this at the soonest convenient time.

Many Thanks

Dr. Victor Images

After sending the message off, Victor let out a big yawn and stretched. However he still had some notes to look over about his upcoming testimony at the trial. He began looking over his PADD and ticking off points when after about twenty minutes he noticed a blinking light on his screen. He clicked on it and a message popped up.

“Letter to Dr. Victor Images

Midshipman Nem Tornis

ASEC Sky Harbour Aegis

Star Date 0308.27

>Begin Letter

Dear Dr. Images,

I would like to request an appointment with you involving my mental health and stability. Knowing you are not the ships councillor I would fully understand if you deny my request. I would like to meet with you concerning my troubling past and also preventing anything like the Ensign Mogg incident.

I have had great control over all of my emotions for the majority of my life but for some reason after leaving the academy I have felt great stress on myself and I believe I need help to control them now. If you can help me please respond shortly if you are not to busy that is.

Sincerely,

Midshipman Nem Tornis

ASEC Sky Harbour Aegis

>End Letter

Yes it was official. Victor was going to die of exhaustion within the week. He was about to send a reply saying his schedule was sadly full when he changed his mind. He noticed that the person sending the message was fresh on board; if he was already having problems it could be dangerous to leave it alone. Victor remembered how he was when he first came on board, jittery, nervous, overworked, stressed and constantly troubled by those dreams. He’d have to make time to see if he could help this midshipman Tornis. Besides, Victor had always been a strong petitioner for the ship to get an official shrink instead of using random doctors, for now it would be him. The last reason he changed his mind was that when you have two fuming girls from engineering after your neck it’s best to keep busy and away from home!

Getting drowsy he wrote a short simple reply

“Dear Midshipman Tornis

My schedule lately has been quite crowded due to this hearing but I am sure I will be able to make some time for a session. How about after tomorrow’s hearing in the office in sickbay?

Sincerely

Doctor Victor Images (Lieutenant Junior Grade)”

Victor began writing a list of things on his agenda at the moment.

1. Testifying at the Mogg hearing

2. Brex’s copper levels to be investigated

3. Counselling for Midshipman Nem Tornis

4. Post trial: Possible counselling for Ensign Mogg

He paused and then smiled as he wrote a last point

5. Complain for getting enough work for 5 doctors

After writing it all out Victor knew that he was far too tired to go down to his quarters and since sickbay was empty anyway, he camped out on a biobed. And slowly he began drifting off to sleep.
