Hunter Matheson

Time Warp

"Time Warp"

Matheson & Granger (her NPCs)

Relax, she says. Sit back and enjoy the ride, she says.

Right.

Kal's grip on the five-point approached white-knuckle as Challenger began its slingshot around the sun. It was supposed to send them back to 1969, but who really knew where they would land?

"Hey. Sarge. Relax."

The voice sounded distant. Distorted. And kind of... fuzzy? Kal blinked but it didn't help.

"Seriously, man. It's okay. Really."

Kal strained, his eyes pressing into their sockets as he looked toward the voice. Challenger's IDS fought to keep up with the acceleration and it suddenly occurred to Kal what a rock in a slingshot felt like.

Finally, just across the way the voice came into focus. It was Souter. What was his name? Danny? Yeah, Danny Souter. Private 1st Class Dan Souter, just sittin' there, chewin' gum and grinnin' like this wasn't any worse than a HAHO.*

Walk in the park. Right.

Danny's head lolled easily against the headrest while Kal fought to keep a straight face.

"Sounds like you've been here a few times, Dan." Kal's voice shook with the ship. At least that's how he figured he'd explain it.

"Maybe." Danny shrugged. "Maybe not. Gum?"

Another squint and Kal barely made out the pack. He waved it off.

"No? Then you're prolly gonna need this," Danny's grin grew as he waved a barf bag in the air, "'specially if you're a first-timer." He gave a snap-pop of his chew. "Usually happens 'round about when, Tash?" He turned to LCpl Hammond, the team medic.

"Apogee," she said casually.

"Yeah. Apogee. That's when we actually whip around," his finger circled, "and it shakes us up real good." Danny leaned forward to wave the bag in Kal's face.

Smartalec kid. "Thanks. I'm good," he said, pressing his lips tight, fighting the urge.

Next to Danny, O'Neill grumbled and snatched the bag, crumpled it and tossed it into the stowage area. "Can't a guy get some sleep?" he mumbled, closing his eyes and curling into the bulkhead. No harness. No belt. Looked like his natural sleeping position.

Kal tried to relax and kick back like the others. Until the ship approached apogee, where the real 'sling-shot' would happen. Soon.

He cringed, wishing he'd taken the offer of that bag.
