Academy Problems

To all of you who tried to go to the academy this evening with myself and STSF Saria, well.. you probably got the same error message as everyone else trying to get into the chat rooms. :(  If you did happen to get into the rooms, congradulations to you.. but none of us hosts could and we're very sorry we couldn't.  Startrek.com is still ironing out some bugs in their new web site.. just bear with us; please try again for Sunday night's academy :D

How about trying to sim in a different chatroom as long as www.startrek.com experiences these sort of problems

like irc, MSN messenger service, or just a plain HTML-Chatroom in a seperate room which is password protected

well, just a suggestion, and I hope startrek.com fixes these bugs as soon as possible

A good idea, Dude!  Actually we DO have backup chat rooms available when the Star Trek Rooms are down.  You'll find the link on the chat page of this website.  (It is disabled if the Star Trek Rooms are functioning.)

Just beware when you get on the Backup Chatrooms, there is a 10 to 20 second "lag" time. Just warning you. Also, I have good advice for all. If all else fails, call a chiropractor.

Lag: Time delay and/or temporary lockup of the chat room. The StarTrek.com rooms had these, too.

The STSF ER Rooms tend to get the lag about midways through a sim (around a :30 time). It also happens when a bunch of people begin accessing these forums during a sim (since it all runs on the same server... I think).

A lot of web sites do that. Cram all the things on a single server, save a few bucks. I reccomend getting another server for the ER or at least get Windows Server 2003, which is from Satan, Bill Gates.

Also, there is a limit on a certain amount of users can actually use the server at a time. Usually, 20 is the limit per server. If they consolidate servers, they can double or even triple their capacity. But, that comes with a higher price tag. But as the fourm grows, how are we going to hold all those members and files? So, what are you going to do? There are three choices.

    A. Keep the one server.
    B.Get more servers.
    C. Have users take a sledge hammer and smash their computer.

The choice is yours.  :D

Actually, to the best of my knowledge, this server runs off of Linux, and is highly capable of a vast many people to be online at one time.

The ER room has caused problems, but I believe that is in it's programming, and not in the server itself. This server runs on a highspeed network, so speed really isn't an issue.

Our webby has plenty of experience, and knows what he's doing. If there is not/is a need for an upgrade, he would know. This is also a private site, ran by a select few individuals (and used by less than 500 users).

Just thought I'd throw that out and, IMO, a server upgrade will not be needed for quite some time. No need to fix something that isn't broken. (::is probably beginning to sound like Fred:: Oy!)

Hey there,

Should the administration of STSF take this to mean you are volunteering to help pay for the server costs and associated bandwith fees? :D

No, Fred. I'm just suggesting something. I am not taking costs of the server at this time.
