Night Of The Happy Doctor (Part 1)

Assistant Medical Officer Images' Personal Log

Victor returned to his quarters, kicked off his shoes and went straight to the replicator.

“Steak, medium rare, blue cheese sauce. With roasted potatoes, assorted vegetables and a glass of white wine.”

The computer complied his request and gave it to him on a tray. He picked it up and took it to his dinner table.

“Computer, some music, relaxing, jazz.”

Louis Armstrong’s rendition of “The sunny side of the street” came through the speakers.

“Ah, almost perfect, apart from the company of a beautiful lady of course”

“Cannot comply with request” The computer responded. Victor rolled his eyes and began to happily dig into his meal.

It had been a pretty normal day, Mogg’s hearing hadn’t gone as far as expected only going up to opening statements. Which meant that the doctor had had to conduct his physicals on the new crew whilst wearing his dress uniform.

Victor chuckled as he cut up his steak. Crew were usually frightened of a physical on a normal basis, expecting to be prodded and poked as if in some torturous ritual. With a doctor in full official regalia, it must have been terrifying! The crewmen in question, Midshipmen Nem (a Bajoran) and Brex (A Bolian) had been in pretty much perfect health with Brex only having a couple of slightly off results being checked out with the lab for the next day.

Thinking of the next day, the Doctor groaned at the prospect of more time being spent sitting in the makeshift courtroom, wearing his best clothes and listening to the lawyers’ speeches. Actually the former two were not too bad, being a witness to be called on a case did feel exhilarating and Victor usually enjoyed some formal events, but the speeches were what really put him off. Legal jargon and official babble had never been his forte; it was a better sedative then most of the drugs in sickbay including merfadon.

Victor also considered just how long this court case was going to last. It had already taken up a large amount of his shift hours. Any more and Dr. Jones would start getting annoyed at these absences. Who knows? It might even look bad on his record and hold him back. Victor decided to forget about the chance of a doomed career and instead took on his steak. Halfway through it he said, “Cohmputcher, cah you ree my messashes?”

“Sorry, command not understood” the computer answered.

Victor swallowed and repeated, “Computer, can you read my messages?” before putting another piece of food in his mouth.

“This communiqué is to serve as notice that effective Star date 0308.22, Ensign Victor Images has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade. This decision comes after extended review of his service and dedication to Sky Harbor Aegis. It is a pleasure to have such a capable officer aboard and I sincerely hope we will value from his assistance in the future.”

Images choked on his roast potato, only stopping it with a large gulp of his wine. After gasping for breath for a moment, a large smile crept across his face.

“Lieutenant Junior Grade Images eh? Not too shabby, not too shabby at all…Computer! Change music to something with more kick, some rock! And whatever it is I’m drinking, I want a whole bottle of it, because right now, it’s as good a time as any to celebrate.”
