Another Homecoming

"Another Homecoming"

Lerak stood at the foot of his parents home. He should have arrived days ago, but the retraining got in the way. No matter. His father probably knew the Talon arrived and how Galae 'debriefings' worked. Securing his bag he pressed the entrance bell.

"Ding ding dong," the bell sounded.

"Who is it," came a muffled voice behind the large wooden front door.

Lerak looked a bit puzzled. "Mother? It is son."

"Really? He returned days ago and never even called his mother let alone stop for a visit." The small eye-level slit in the door opened. An eye looked all around. "Are au a self-sealing stem bolt salesman?"

"What? No. I'll explain. It's cold out here can..." The locks released and the door swung open. His mother was in her night gown as it was nearly midnight.

"Au should have called my son. Come in come in," Lerak's mother said while waving him. The door closed begin to reveal the darkened entry way. "Everyone else is asleep. Au must be on Talon time."

"In a manner of speaking, ie," he answered simply. The couch he sat in felt just as comfortable as he remembered. Old and warn. A family heirloom of all things. His mother came back with a cup of hot tea for him.

"There, just as Au like it. Hot, spicy and a hearty helping of honey." She considered Lerak as they both sat in the low light of group of candles on the table behind them. "Au look worn out." She brushed a stray strand of hair from his face. "Some women rough Au up?"

Lerak smiled a bit. "Odd Au say that. I was on the receiving end of a skilled dheno. I only need rest." The tea felt good going down.

"Well, rest Au shall have. Aur father has not broken anything since Au were last here, so no repair work. Did Au ever find any information about Aur friend...what was her name?" The late hour did no favors for his mother's memory.

"Laehval, and ie, but I'm not sure how much I can say," he answered. "I have a lot to think about." Down the hallway another figure slowly approached. Her hands were at her face rubbing her eyes.

"Lerak!" His sister raced to meet him, but she waddled while she did so. He got up to embrace her and stopped short. Her belly stuck out as if...

"Au are with child?" Lerak said with amazement and shock.

Grinning, "Ie, ie. Au are going to be an uncle!"
