“How He Came to Be” (Log series, part 3 of 3)

Commander Skaggs looked at Demore through the monitor. “Your sister joined some Black Ops group, Hewitt.”

Demore thought for a moment. “Well, that’s what her plan was, right? She went back to Bajor to study the Black Ops, or so I heard.”

Skaggs went on. “Yes, that is correct. Then, she came and joined Starfleet.” The commander looked at Demore’s face expression. “That’s right, Hewitt. Your sister is also a Federation Starfleet officer.”

Demore had no idea of this. Last he had heard she was on Bajor. But, that was many years ago. “Commander, I’ve searched for her name on countless occasions in the ship’s database. It has yet to turn any results up from the last 8 years… the last information it has pertains to her transfer from the colony to Bajor.”

The commander smiled. “Do the math, son.” He waited for him to think.

Almost as if a light bulb came on, he smiled. “Black Ops – they made her change her name, didn’t they?”

Skaggs nodded. “And don’t bother asking – they won’t tell me what the devil her name is. I have no earthly idea, son.” He tapped a button that Demore couldn’t see. “I really wish I did.”

Demore looked up to see the “Secure Channel” light suddenly go out. Looking through the screen, he saw the door to his father’s quarters open, and three people come inside.

The screen went blank. He had ended the conversation.

Obviously, his father had been caught talking to his son. Something most would think is normal, but face it: Demore’s family isn’t normal. Hopefully he’d be able to talk to Commander Skaggs again.

Demore still wasn’t thinking of the commander has his father. In his mind, he had been without a father for years. But now, history as he remembered it was changing.

Then he thought of his second question he had wanted to find out, and realized he still didn’t have an answer. Where had his father gone for those 1.8 stardates? He still didn’t know, but he had a good feeling it was Starfleet related… and possibly related to the cause of the attack on the colony. In time, Demore hoped to find out.

Demore stood up, and locked his console. If they caught his father, more than likely he would be receiving a communiqué from Starfleet with a whole list of questions; most pertaining to the “What did he tell you?” question. It came before he even made it to the door of his quarters – but he decided to get it later.

Demore walked out the door, and went back to work. Stepping into the turbolift he said, “Main Engineering, and don’t tell me I have mail!”
