Demore continued to look at the screen.

Commander Skaggs nodded. “Yes, Lieutenant. Your father lived through the attack on Colony 2437, in the Hitami sector. In fact,” he laughed, “he became quite a Commander.”

Demore continued to stare at the screen. He didn’t know if it was anger, love, or hatred running through him right now, but he knew his emotions were building up.

The commander hesitated to continue speaking, but did so anyway. “It may seem hard to believe, but yes,” he hesitated a long while this time, “I am your father.” The commander then smiled. “That makes you my son, Mr. Demore.”

Demore couldn’t understand what was going on. He was lost in his own world. Now his past was changing, too.

“No!” Demore shouted into the monitor. “My father was killed on Hitami in the attack. He’s dead, and I can’t change that. You cannot be my father!”

Commander Skaggs paused to think back about his own past, and how he had come to be “Graham Skaggs”. She shook it out of his head – bad memories were now coming back over him. “No, son. Your father was not killed. He is very much alive, as you can see.”

Demore didn’t know what to believe. He tapped some buttons, attempting to bring up a background report on Commander Skaggs.

“Access denied to background profiles,” said the computer voice. Demore half expected this to happen.

“My files are a mess. Starfleet still hasn’t figured out what they’re going to put in the database for all those years I was gone.” He shrugged. “You’d think they would have figured that out before they sent me. Hmph.”

Demore simply stared at Commander Skaggs through the console. He couldn’t believe it. He laughed to himself, and thought, “It’s like talking to a dead guy.”

Hewitt thought about what the commander said. “You mean Starfleet sent you to live at the colony?”

The commander nodded. “Me and your mother, both. That’s where you were born, you know.” He laughed again, re-living some good memories. “That’s where we adopted your sister, too,” he said.

Demore looked up at the screen. “Yea… my sister. Have you heard from her lately?”

Commander Skaggs gave Demore an awkward look. “Oh.”

“Oh what?” Demore replied.

“I didn’t know that you hadn’t heard about your sister.”

Demore looked puzzled. “Heard what about her?”

Skaggs looked directly at the screen. “About what happened to her.”
