"How He Came to Be" (Log Series, part 1 of 3)

=/\=BEGIN LOG=/\=

Demore entered his quarters, and sat back in the only chair in the room. He was never really keen on having visitors, and this helped “persuade” them to leave. Most people can only stand up for so long.

He especially didn’t want visitors now. Outside his quarters, you’d never notice anything was wrong. In fact, he seemed in a rather cheerful mood. But inside him, he knew he was in utter turmoil.

The CAT-5 system installation was complete, but he really didn’t care about that… not since he learned about his father. In fact, it was hard for Demore to concentrate during the installation of the CAT-5 (which was obvious, since Demore didn’t notice the database installed on Aegis didn’t meet the requirements for the CAT-5. Luckily, an update of the same database did. No major problems noticed). All he could think about was his father, and what had happened to him.

One question wouldn’t leave his mind: What does Starfleet know, and why won’t they tell me? He had sent several communiqués to Starfleet Headquarters, with only a single response:

-----------

Message Delivered for Hewitt Demore from Starfleet Headquarters:

“Dear Hewitt Demore:

The information you have requested about [incident Number 1775465123247] is of a classified nature. If we can assist in any other way, please notify us. It has been noted in the database that you would like to access this information and, if it is ever declassified, you will be instantly notified.

Starfleet out.”

------------

It had been a short answer, but it got the word across. Demore was not going to get the information he wanted… at least, not through conventional means. The message had been sent from Commander Graham C. Skaggs’ office, who is the director of the Hitami Sector Research Department.

Demore was still not any closer to solving the mystery of his father. Had he even been on the planet when the colony was attacked?

Demore’s console beeped. He was receiving an incoming message from the Hitami sector.

“Must be wanting to make sure I don’t go around their backs to figure out something about the incident,” Demore muttered to himself.

He clicked the screen on. It was the director himself – Commander Graham Skaggs.

Commander Skaggs looked at Demore on the screen. “Good afternoon, Mr. Demore,” he said. Without waiting for a response from Demore, he continued. “Keep your mouth shut, Hewitt.”

Suddenly a light on the console came on. He had secured the channel, so no one could listen in.

“Hewitt,” he said, “what I am about to tell you must stay with you, and only you, for as long as you live.”

At that, Demore turned up the volume on his console, locked the door, and brought out a picture of his entire family. He looked at his father.

“No,” he muttered. “It can’t be.”

… to be continued.  :D
