Night of the Comet of Doom...

Two nights ago, Trainar sat outside of the small home his family lived in on the outskirts of Kanista Starport. It was little more than an impoverished and failed spaceport that had been built upon this forsaken planet. Far from more regular trade routes, its only purpose was to provide that much needed waypoint between several remote planets that needed to stop for supplies and fuel to make it to the next real trade route junction.

The main trade town situated on a large flat plain stretching away from the sea, it had become home to those that had come hoping to make a fortune populating a new trade route, those that had lost their employ on long range vessels and those, having no further means of securing passage further than place.

Further complicating matters for those destined to be stuck in this place, was that damnable nebula. It was bad enough they were off the regular routes, but only those that knew the routes, even knew that Kanista was even hidden behind the nebula. Making things worse, was the blasted nebula, was expanding over time, having totally hidden the planet behind it now. From the planet, the day took on a strange purple hue, but at night, it was an eerie purplish-green that filled the night sky.

For the last two nights, a sudden brightness had appeared in the sky from the direction of the nebula. The spaceport skipper had turned on his sensors and determined that it was some sort of comet, and it appeared to be heading their way, but should not cause them any problem, as far as he knew, it was going to be close, but the atmosphere, should cause it to skip away……..

Should…

That’s when it became apparent to most of those living here, that this thing looked like it was coming right for them. The few that actually had ships, quickly loaded and left, taking along those that could pay for their passage off world. For those that could not, fear began to take grip; as it looked that now it would crash directly into them, and kill them all. Many took shelter, others trying to watch from the safety of a window, but others, had been determined that if they were to face their end, they would do it defiantly, and shaking a fist to the sky.

Thus it was, that the rogue comet, which had passed through the nearby Chelix Nebula then skimmed the atmosphere of Kanista, it’s tail passing through the atmosphere, dropping debris and radiation in it’s wake. The gravitational pull of the comet, set off a chain reaction of tidal surges, causing flooding along the coast of the town, and earthquakes, knocking down some of the less sturdy edifices located within the town.

And those, that had been defiantly standing there, willing the comet away, suddenly were not to be seen. Only a strange orange dust remained surrounded by the now unused clothing.
