Computer problems

Ok this is mostly a message to my fellow simmers on the Hood(I play ensign Sivok) and the Reaent but you other people can look if you want :D. Ok first off my reguler computer contracted the win32blasterworm virus  :D so its been out of commision for the past few days. So I got a old laptop set up but it dosent really like me and keeps freezing and refusing to turn on and stuff :). Thirdly I was putting items on ebay and completly lost track of time and before I knew it I had missed the Reaent sim :D. Iam really really really sorry about this  :D. I have taken my computer in to a fixer upper person and it should be repaired tommorow (Friday) or the next day  :D. Also I am going on a vacation Sunday-Wendsday so to my fellow hood simmers I expect to have internet but am not 100 percent sure so just warning ya that I might not get there. Anyway I would have sent this message by email but at the moment I am using one of those web mail services and it dosent show me my address book  :). So anyway again I am really sorry for missing the Reaent tonight and hopefully this cascade of problems falling on my simm life will soon come to an end  .

While Microsoft is generally lax on security issues, and it shows in their software, you can't really blame the *system* for this one.

- There's been a patch for the exploit out for nearly a month before anyone took advantage of it (unless you were unlucky enough to be using the "unsupported" NT 4).

- Most firewalls blocked the worm - including the dismally inadequate "Internet Connection Firewall" that comes with the system.

Users should be more aware of the security issues on an Internet-enabled computer.  If you keep your system up to date, set up your software not to be an automatic security hole (::cough:: Outlook), install firewall and antivirus software (did I mention keeping up to date?), and use common sense, most problems of this sort won't affect you.

In my experience, WinXP tends to be more stable than the older versions, although it is equally (or possible more) insecure "out of the box."

If you haven't been able to fix it, it's a simple fix to get you back online.  You have to be offline for this fix to work.  So, unplug your ethernet cable or don't sign onto your dialup provider.

1) For windows xp users, hit ctrl + alt + delete and hit the processes tab and end the process for msblast.exe.

2) Now...go into Windows explorer to your C:\windows\system32\ folder and delete the msblast.exe program.

3) Then hit your start button, then run and type in regedit and go to the edit menu when it pops open and click find and type in msblast.  Once found, click on it and hit delete on your keyboard.

4) Reboot, patch, virus scan.

This is almost as easy as lather, rinse, repeat.

Oh...and this is based on my own experiences with the worm...not our good friendly peoples who run stsf .  If you need more help, feel free to find me on aim at mIRC Packet.

:)
