Winston Chronicles Qob/Tranquility Universe : Suggestions

2018

Suggestions

Winston/Guardian garage; Unspeakable district.

“Okay gentlemen, this was the reason your speeders were not performing at the level your superiors desired. This part right here,” Daniel Winston pointed. “this is a plasma flow governor it restricts the amount of ..”

The arrival of another Guardian speeder at the garage caught the attention of Winston’s class of three Guardian mechanics abruptly as the speeder braked hard for a stop, sending up a cloud of dust. Two Guardians immediately exited the vehicle. Winston knew both of them.

“Well if it isn’t my ‘parole’ officer. Guys, let’s adjourn for the day. I sense Deputy Strike is going to take up the rest of my allotted time with you all. We shall resume where we left off at the plasma flow governor. Class dismissed.”

The three Guardian mechanics heeded the Deputy’s arrival and departed the scene in a transport speeder parked inside the garage. With Shrike was Lawman Benson, who seemed to be in Daniel’s opinion his “right hand man”. The three men greeted each other amicably.

“Jiles, make a note to have our mechanics armed when they go on their next ‘field trip,’” the Deputy requested.

“Copy sir, also my ODRI shows no bad guys”

“As does mine.” Deputy Shrike replied, then turned his full attention to Winston. “I came to apologize, I did my best to keep you and your son at Precinct HQ; far more secure than this location. The Sheriff would not budge on his insistence you have your own property. Speaking of Mark, where is he?”

“Responding to another one of his ‘calls’; The Nakars, a Pakled family three blocks down had a vole in their residence. He’s got his rifle.”

“That puny kids model I’ve seen on your charger?” Benson shook his head. “That will not stop a Nausicaan, it might give the Pe`TaQ a rash at the most.”

“Lawmen Benson is right. Mr. Winston, your son’s life is in danger as well. These guys have kidnapped family members and mailed back limbs until a ransom was paid,” the Deputy mentioned. “I admire his volunteerism, but this is not the place for it.”

“Don’t you think I know that!” Winston exclaimed. “What do you expect me to do, lock my seventeen year old son in the tool room where he sleeps at night?! Pardon the ‘Tholian’, but your superior is an idiot! I was quite content and felt safe living in our shuttle at HQ.”

Shrike could not disagree with the “wonder mechanic” on the derogatory remark towards his superior. Although giving the man property for free was a indeed a kind gesture, it was a tactically foolish one. The move exposed the Winston family, and Guardians in an unsecured area.

“I did make some upgrades to Mark’s rifle,” Daniel replied hesitantly. “It’s basically got the equivalent power of a Type 2 stun setting on it now. It won’t kill a Nausicaan, just knock him out for a while.”

“A wise move; illegal but wise. I won’t make a note of it. What about yourself?”

“Well, follow me.” The three walked to the opposite end of the garage which could hold three speeders. “Here is the charger wall you know so well,” Winston gestured with an open hand; “my type 2 from Vesta and my slug thrower”

Lawman Benson could not suppress a laugh much to his Superior's chagrin. “Sorry, a ‘slug thrower’? You must be joking. There is a reason why those weapons are not used anymore. You only get five or six shots and then your through. Although I must say that is oddest looking ‘slug thrower’ I have ever seen.”

Daniel Winston redirected the conversation. “Deputy, why the heck couldn’t you guys give me a rifle that would bring a Nausicaan down for our self defense?”

“Mr. Winston, Guardians do not have an armory like your starbase did. It’s forbidden by treaty for Guardians to carry lethal weaponry. Haven’t you noticed every Guardian that has been watching you and your son carry different side arms? We have to make due with what we have, and many Guardians are armed with what they immigrated with. I’m sorry Tranquility is a different place, you should know that by now.”

Winston looked at the two Guardians sidearms. The Deputy appeared to have one of Klingon make, his companion’s he could not identify. He followed his inspection with a suggestion. “What about installing a force field wall along the front of the garage?” Winston proceeded by motioning with his hand in the general direction of the large garage bay door.

“Deputy, that’s actually a decent idea; costly as heck, but feasible.” Benson chimed in.

“Okay I’ll run that by the Sheriff ASAP. One thing that will cut the cost is if you install it Winston. We won’t have to hire any Gular Consortium people to do the job. Can you do that?”

“I’ve dealt with warp fields, shields and airlocks. I can do it. Just get the field emitters quickly.”

“Okay sounds like a plan.” The Deputy put his hand on Winston’s shoulder. “Daniel, you have to reign your son in. We have the ‘Cycles of Death’ on the run now thanks to you, and they are very unhappy about that. I’d hate to see anything terrible happen to Mark.”

“Yeah, my thoughts exactly.” Winston replied somberly as the two senior Guardians departed following an inspection of the two shift Guardians protecting his life.
