Let's differentiate between impeachment and recall.  In order to initiate impeachment, and certainly for it to happen, I believe that you need *legal* grounds.  For a recall, it's up to the public to determine when it's an appropriate course.

While it is true that there need to be legal grounds for impeachment of an elected official, recall, in my opinion, can also for keeping politicians accountable to their constituency.

Taken this for example, the 1988 election campaign of President George Bush, Sr.  He promised the American public that they would not be burdened with any new taxes.  Despite the promise, he chose to support the raising of taxes after pressure from Congress.  No he did not do anything illegal, however, he mislead the very public he was elected to serve.  What can the average citizen do? Well, at this point there is no Federal recall law, but, such a thing, if it existed, might've kept President Bush accountable to the promises he made.

In reference to your previous post, I apologize if there was any misunderstanding.  Frivolous or not, I do think you have to look at it from a legal perspective, because intentions of the law, even inferred, are not defined.  As long as the law is being fulfilled, I do not have a problem with the recall.

Well, there is precedence for this.  Former California Governor (now Oakland Mayor) Jerry Brown campaigned at a Star Trek convention once when running for President.

Or was that a Saturday Night Live skit?  Oh well, with "Governor Moonbeam" you never know.

... and I seem to be taking this from the perspective of what political precedent it could set, and how that might hinder effective government.

It will be interesting to see what happens after this recall attempt, whatever the result of the vote.

Oh, and, Travis, take an aspirin and call me in the morning. :D

I hate to point out the obvious, but most Californians are IN FAVOR of the recall.  What's wrong with letting us decide if it's frivilous or not?

By the way, since the power is back on I think we can unpin this topic.
