Rank and You

This Has Been A GromVik Production

August 2003

      Over the years, I have heard more simming complaints about one subject than any other's combined.  The subject is rank and promotions.  Some officers take rank as it comes, but others, whom I'm really addressing today, are consumed with promotions and getting to a higher rank.  Of all the sims in STSF, Sky Harbor Aegis seems to be the most frustrating.

Why?

      Sky Harbor Aegis has run a very different ranking system for years.  Every member of this simulation starts at the rank of midshipman and works their way up.  I started as a midshipman more than three years ago.  Ethan Hawke has been through the system at least a couple times.  Even the venerable Captain Sorehl was once a midshipman!

      The rank of midshipman is neither a downgrade nor a demotion from your graduation from STSF Academy.  I have seen more players discouraged on Aegis because rank isn't "coming fast enough."  The reality is, the Aegis system, although is different in its accession, is close to equal to the promotion ladders of other STSF vessels.

For Example:

Although the two are not completely the same, here is the comparison between the rank system on Sky Harbor Aegis and USS Reaent (T'hursdays at 10 PM EST)

Sky Harbor Aegis    USS Reaent

Midshipman=           Ensign

Ensign=              Lieutenant (jg)

Lieutenant (jg)=        Lieutenant

Lieutenant=          First Lieutenant

Lt Cdr=                Lt Cdr

Commander=       Commander

etc.              etc.

      Now, like I said, the two are not exactly the same, but they are close enough to be able to make a point.  My advise to you is not to let rank consume you.  Rank will come when the GMs feel you have demonstrated the abilities to hold that particular rank.  Playing to the best of your abilities, conduct in and out of sims, attendance and writing logs are just a few factors that GMs take into consideration when discussing your next promotion.

      Remember, rank isn't everything.  If you're so consumed with rank, you miss out on the fun of the advanced sim environment.  That's what we're about, having fun! When simming becomes more than a game, problems are bound to occur, and the fun element usually always disappears.  Focus on the things you can control like conduct, attendance and logs for example.

      It's a pleasure serving with you all on board. :)

I used to get disappointed whenever I'd get promoted from ensign.  I just liked being an ensign.  I finally got smart and just asked new CO's to not promote me, lol.

::sighs:: I agree. Ensignhood is much more fun than Lieutenantsville. And forget about that Commander stuff...it's nothing but grief.

::sighs again:: I asked my CO not to promote me beyond ensign. I don't think he heard me.

Okay, the above phenomenon appears to be weird . . . that was supposed to be my post . . . :(

Let's try this again . . .

I'm not that interested in being promoted. Theoretically, the faster you're promoted the longer you actually have to wait, since LtCdr is the highest you can go basically. I'm happy with being an Ensign, it's easier to type than Lieutenant . . . if I get promoted, I get promoted--but don't expect me to be happy. :D Que sera, sera.
