STSF Seiben

New Beginnings

2 weeks ago, Geneva, Swiss Confederation:

It was a busy couple of weeks. After graduation, they made him fill out a survey of his preferences of potential assignments within the Fleet. Space Stations, Outposts and of course, Starships. All of which interested the young Seiben in varying degrees. But, at it turns out, Maximus Seiben was happy that he was going to follow in his family's footsteps by taking assignment into one of Starfleet's most state-of-the-art ships.

For as long as there was a United Federation of Planets, there was at least one Seiben serving on a starship at any given time. Pre-dating the Federation, his great-great-great-grandfather was an engineer and warp drive designer for General Electric for the NX line of ships in the mid-22nd century. Yes, the Seiben name yielded a plethora of results in the Starfleet biographical database. From his grand-uncle Hans who served in as an Engineer and later the Chief Science Officer of the USS Hood, to his own grandfather, Ambassador Rolf Seiben, who was the first Captain of the Challenger, to the modern day Seibenses of his uncles Hans and Hans, who served on the Arcadia and Republic respectively.

Maximus remembered the devastating news of the death of his uncle Hans (the one who served on the Arcadia) almost a decade ago, and the near-deaths of his other uncle Hans on the Republic, which was probably more times he count count using his fingers. But, luckilly that Hans managed to dodge the Grim Reaper every time, despite all the trouble he and the rest of his crew of the old Republic-D managed to get themselves into.

At the tender age of 21, Maximus was now about to make his own contributions into the long, proud Starfleet history his family was a part of. "Are you sure you have everything you need, Max?" asked his mother, Madison. A decorated former Starfleet officer herself, now turned Senator for the UFP, stuck her head into his room. "Yes, mom. Fredrick just double-checked my luggage. I'm good to go" replied Max as he nodded his thanks to Fredrick, their longtime family butler.

"Very well then" smiled Madison response. Maximus watched as Fredrick took his luggage out to freight elevator. "Well, I need to be at the Senate in Paris in 30 minutes." Madison said, as she finished applying the last of her make-up. For a woman in her 40s, Madison still looked attractive enough to be mistaken for someone in their early 30s. "This blouse I'm wearing doesn't show my rack that much does it?" pondered Madison as she looked at her reflection in the holo-mirror.

Shrugging, Madison grabbed her bag and hugged her son. "Well, I have to go now. I'm running behind schedule" she said, looking at her chrono. "Good luck, Max. Remember to always listen to your Captain and Executive Officer. If both of them are bickering with each other like a married couple... well, just use your own common sense, or randomly tap at your console. It worked for me, on the Aquarius" recalled Madison, where the CO and XO argued with each in 2 months, more times than most married people do in 50 years. "Just remember son, the CO and the XO bicker, because they care."

"Yeah, I'll keep that in mind, thanks" replied Max as they both took the stairs down to the main hall. "When does your shuttle come to pick you up?" asked Madison. "Another hour I think" mused Max. Madison smiled and kissed Maximus. "Do keep in touch, and don't hesitate to call if you need anything. We're all proud of you. Good-bye." Madison opened the doors and headed to the estate's car port, and walked towards her high-end BMW shuttle craft. Max watched as the shuttle took off and headed over Lake Geneva towards Paris, the last time he'd see his mother in what probably will be a very long time.

A few hours later....

Clearing customs was a doddle. The shuttle picked up Max and took him to McKinley Station where he then boarded his flight which would take him to his new assignment. Sitting in his quarters aboard the New Orleans class frigate USS Superior, Maximus read up on the mission his new ship was currently undertaking. He had never heard of this planet before and scored marginal at best in geology. He hoped he could remember all that he learned from that class and not be too much of a hinderance.

The trip was uneventful, save for a stop over at Starbase 133 where one of the ensigns got drunk and was involved in a bar fight with an angry Klingon trader. Maximus was enlisted to help bring the ensign back to the ship after the Klingon punched him in the face and knocked him unconscious. Not a good way to start off your Starfleet career on the right foot mused Maximus as he carried the ensign into sickbay. Before long, his thoughts were interrupted by a comm from the Superior's Operations Officer.

"Ensign Seiben, we've now caught up with the Excalibur. Please report to the transporter room with your belongings in 5 minutes" Maximus tapped his comm badge and gave his acknowledgement as he grabbed his pre-packed luggage and headed to the ship's transporter room. He felt the ship slow to a stop, and managed to take a look at what would be his new home through one of the windows.

The Akira-class Excalibur and New Orleans Class Superior were now stopped and side-by-side, no more than 1000 km apart from each other. Maximus hurried into the transporter room and stepped onto the transporter pad where seconds later would materialize onto the transporter pad of the Excalibur. Following a yeoman to his quarters, Seiben looked around the corridors of the ship. He'd become familiar with it soon enough, he bet.

But, for now, Ensign Maximus Seiben took in his new surroundings and the new adventures (and misadventures) that he would soon add to his own history of service in the Fleet. The prospect of which excited him. Once he settled into his quarters, Maximus looked out of his window just in time to see the Superior jump to warp, heading for whatever part of space she was due to explore. Now on his own, Maximus began to unpack. looking forward to his first day of a new ambitious stage of his life.
