Why Don't People In Red Die Anymore

31 posts in this topic

Watching TNG today I realized the people in red no longer die it worked with TOS for so long but now they stay alive. When ever you watch TOS you know the guys wearing red were going to die (not my favorite Scotty though he was special) but now all the bridge crew are in red and of course they live this makes me sad people in red should die. :)

What about that TNG one with the alien face in the big cloud? He killed a redshirt just because he wanted to see what it would look like.

If I recall correctly the first person to die on TNG (Encounter at Farpoint) was a Redshirt. And it was an intentional tip of the hat to the original series.  STMAG did a funny study on which color uniforms led the fatality count.

(now if I can find it!)

TNG did have a fair share of guys in red die -- those helm and ops seats are especially dangerous, except, unfortunately, when Wesley sat there.

That's all ok...tonight in the early academy sim, I made sure that a red shirt died...albeit he was under my care...something about a bumpy landing of a large starship and me slamming against a panel that controls the cortical stimulators.

;D

No, nothing as pricey and high tech as Spandex.  We got velour.  Cheap 60's velour.  Meters and meters of it.

People in red dont die too much due to the fact that in TNG Red is the color of the command staff, and yellow is security.  In TOS it was the other way around (Or, Red was something else, I dont remember, I was born 20 years after TOS first aired!)

It's sort of hard to come up with a way to kill a member of the command staff every show...Just think how much TNG would have sucked, to have Riker go on an away mission, and then be mysteriously blown up like all the other red shirts?

In conclusion, its too expensive to hire new lead actors, they just pic homless guys up off the street, and transform them into red shirts before they relize whats happening...  :D    :D

Or maybe just the plucky comedy relief.

(Brownie points to whomever can identify that reference)
