Which Trek is the right Trek?

Alright, as Vice Admiral* Andrew Lyon beamed up to the Metroplex, something hit me, the guy behind the keyboard.

It's been six years since Star Trek: Enterprise came to an end. The new novels are considered cannon, and we have Star Trek Online. If they both had the same thing, I'd say alright, two Treks are one, but they aren't. The Novels make it sound like the Borg are almost gone/have been forced to do a major change, while Star Trek Online the Borg are the same, just more liberated Drones, and so forth.

Maybe I missed a keypoint in Trek lore, but are these two seperate Treks, or are they different times? I am confused that I can use older uniforms on STO.

And if you ask why I ask here, since I figure most of you have kept up to date on Trek as I boned up on Battle Tech, Transformers, Terminator, just to name a few series.

Andrew:

This is a bit of a loaded question. It's hard to tell what the so called *right* Trek is these days as we have 40 plus years of etablished timelines, a new separate retro timeline, books, multiple series and movies.

And, we also have a very mouthy fan base who will debate into infinity what the right Star Trek is. Wait, did I say mouthy out loud? Whoops - I meant protective. We are a protective fan base. ::grins::

I can't comment on the DS9, TNG and VOY novels as a whole with regard to the Borg as I'm not a regular reader other then TNG: Titan or Multi-Generation novels such as Typhon Pact.

I'm also anti-Borg at this point in my fandom as I believe they are over used as a convenient bad guy concept. I've no plans to use 'em on the Comanche Creek and if the New TOS movie franchise should happen to utilize the Borg, I promise I won't jump off the bridge in a panic but merely cross that bridge when I come to it. :P

As for Star Trek Online, excerpt below from the Wikipedia article. Sounds like the MMO is a future concept, to be considered separate from the new movie franchise storyline (which is understandable). It also tries to incorporate multiple Treks, stories, uniforms, etc.

I've never played it, so maybe someone who is a STO MMOer can offer some insight.

The game is set in the 25th century, 30 years after the events of Star Trek Nemesis.

...The game setting is in a war-time universe in the year 2409, utilizing any and all officers who have access to a ship, including the player's character...

The game features references to several famous storylines, ships, and characters from various Star Trek shows. While the game occurs in the original series timeline (which does not consider the storyline in the recent movie), one confirmed Star Trek film reference was revealed when Zachary Quinto announced at the 2009 Spike TV Video Game Awards that he will be voicing dialogue during the game's tutorial. Leonard Nimoy is heard for all of the gameplay and exploration voice-over samples. The LCARS computer system dialog is voiced by a Majel Barrett impersonator.

It's all pointless. Anything that followed Generations that involved Picard or events he helped set in motion never happened because Picard is still in the Nexus. First Contact, Insurrection and Nemesis are all simply Picard daydreaming inside the Nexus. That Borg episode in Enterprise never happened. The opening to In A Mirror Darkly is exactly how it was supposed to happen since Picard wasn't there to change it. That means Trek Canon is the Mirror Universe. Deal with it.

First I wish publically apologize for any misunderstanding. The reference to rank and ship were of my Star Trek Online ones. They are in no way connected to STSF.net, beyond being mentioned, also a good way to point out I play the game.

Now before the little hamster in my brain burns out here, let me see if I have this straight.

The novels happen in the late 23rd century, while the game happens in the 24th one. Which explains why certain characters who make appearances/mentioned in the game have moved so much forward in life. The new novels (which I understand are cannon)can be seen as a fill gap, so eventually they'll connect to the game. Is that in a nutshell?

And I wondered why Laforge got nose bleeds talking about time travel...

I think Star Trek in general can give everyone a nose bleed with regard to time travel! If we really think about it, how many timelines/events/lives has the franchise as a whole messed up? ::grins::

Yeah, and even the Temporal Prime Directive and those time cops didn't help. There is simply no objective way to know that any particular timeline is the correct one. However, everyone in it will naturally assume it is unless they have a specific reason to know better.

But let's say you know your timeline is incorrect but you lack the ability to change it. What then? What are you to do?

Suck it up and deal with it. Perhaps even work within it with what you know to make subtle changes.
