USS Excalibur

Cptn Swain: MISSION BRIEF: Excalibur is currently in orbit of the planet Caldor, where we have been sent to offer aide. Medical, security, and the marines are getting into position to offer aide, an event further complicated by a large earthquake monitored a few hours after Excalibur entered orbit. Engineering and science, meanwhile, are assisting with a development at one of the six geothermal plants that is having difficulty maintaining stable pressures.

Cptn Swain: Questions?

Cptn Swain: No?

Cptn Swain: BEGIN SIM

Cptn Swain: BEGIN SIM

Cptn Swain: BEGIN SIM

Laarell: ::working with Engineering, ignoring Tandy as much as Orionly possible::

Fae: :: At ops, having transferred what data she had to Laarell ::

Cptn Swain: ::At mission operations, looking over data from the earthquake::

Rue Wydown: ((apparently the room doesn't like me either tonight))

Cptn Swain: ::While also monitoring the 'big picture'::

Charlotte Matsumura: ::in main security, organizing the teams and shifts to provide security and guard duty for personnel providing aid::

Rue Wydown: Need to get a command post set up on the planet surface. When was the last tremor?

Laarell: ::also looking at some of the recent seismographic data::

Fae: The big one was just over two hours ago, Rue.

Fae: There have been any number of aftershocks, as you would expect.

Taryn Castell: ::Sickbay was relatively calm. All preparations had been made and now they were playing the waiting game. The anticipation was a killer.::

Cptn Swain: ::Teykier:: I'd like a full profile of the quake done, and see if we can get a history of the planet's geolgical activity. How many planets can it be normal for you to have five quakes over 8.0 in a period of three weeks?

Charlotte Matsumura: ::pulling up the necessary forms to document steps she's taken, in accordance to Federation plans and procedures::

Rue Wydown: We need an area that's close to the damage but not siting directly one one of the fault lines.

Tandaris Admiran: @::in ur geologikly unstable plannit, scannin' ur geothermul faciliteez::

Laarell: ::Swain:: I don't think it's very normal at all. ::scrolling on her screen through some of the deep-crust imagery they pieced together, flipping through the results with one, long nail:: And some of the "aftershocks" were in the sixes. That's big.

Tandaris Admiran: @::Translation: he and a team of shock-commando-engineers have beamed down to one of the geothermal facilities to render assistance::

Cptn Swain: The Dominion might have better records of their history as well, Camelot should be able to get them for you.

Laarell: ::The Orion was still used to over-explaining science things, after years of Double Oh-Dog instead of Science Swain:: Aftershocks are usually quite a lot smaller, just echoes of the major event. These are full quakes in their own right...

Laarell: Oh goodie. I like playing in the Dominion database. ::vq::

Cptn Swain: ::Smiles::

Tandaris Admiran: @ No, no, no. The induction coils don't work that way. You can't just dump the excess energy from the core turbines like that. No wonder you're having problems.

Tandaris Admiran: @ You need more vents here, and here. ::stabs at the schematic on the table in front of him:: And some kind of emergency bypass mechanism here.

Cptn Swain: ::Decides not to point out that he had, in fact, aced Plate Tectonics 101::

Tandaris Admiran: @::wishing he had Howard along, as it had been a while since he did geothermal power generation, and he was rather winging it at the moment::

Cptn Swain: ::On the other hand:: The six major population zones are centered around a rift valley, it might do us some good to take a look at the triple fault lines are, see what kind of formations we have. We also should try and find out sort of quakes these are. Five mega-thrust quakes in such a short period of time is rather surprising.

Rue Wydown: +Medical, Security+ Wydown to disaster relief crew. You all set?

Laarell: ::small blink:: Oh, uh, yes.

Taryn Castell: +Rue+ Yes, Commander. Medical is prepared in sickbay and triage cargo bay. Do you need a team to beam down to the planet?

Tandaris Admiran: ((Anyone want to play my opposite number among the Caldorians?))

Charlotte Matsumura: +Wydown+ Security teams are assigned and on standby.

Cptn Swain: @Galon> ::Very happy to see Tandaris::

Cptn Swain: @Galon> Oh, Commander Tandaris, thank the gods! ::Dressed in primative safety equipment that had been left over by the Dominion:: The command center is this way... we've had to close off the primary route due to a liquid nitrogen leak...

Laarell: ::thrown off by someone knowing what a rift valley was, moves on "smoothly":: Uh, I'm guessing the rifting is just accelerating, and since it had a large earthquake, it sort of sent off, like, a chain reaction.

Cptn Swain: That's possible, but if the area has been more or less stable for a long period of time, something had to have triggered it.

Cptn Swain: That's why we need a complete history of the geologic activity...

Laarell: ::looks over to Fae:: Could you get me a patch through to Camelot?

Tandaris Admiran: @::glances from the schematics to Galon to the terrified technician who had been escorting him and then back to Galon:: Nitrogen. Oh, for cooling. Right.

Rue Wydown: +Castell+ Yep ::popping the "p" in her answer:: Let's have a team on the ground set up at the command center. We'll need to help moblize the civilian relief effort in a more organized fashion. Send any supplies needed to the transporter for beam down. I'll meet the away team in the transporter room in twenty minutes.

Fae: :: Tries to get Laarell her patch ::

Tandaris Admiran: @::follows Galon, wondering why a geothermal plant has a "command center"::

Rue Wydown: +Matsumura+ Great, have the team heading to the planet meet me in the transporter room in 20 minutes.

Cptn Swain: @Galon> ::Leads the way to the 'command center' of the plant, which looks something like main engineering on a starship, only with Dominion labeled panels, with notes written all over them in the native language::

Charlotte Matsumura: +Wydown+ Understood, Commander. Matsumura out.

Laarell: We'll see if the Dominion bothered being a good record-keeper on the geological side.

Laarell: ::tempted to bring the Horta in on this::

Taryn Castell: +Rue+ Aye, aye, Commander. Medical out.

Laarell: ::The Horta did like a good igneous rock.::

Cptn Swain: @Galon> We've tried to centralize the primary control systems for the turbines and such as much as possible.

Cptn Swain: @Galon> Few of our people can even read Dominion, let alone operate their machinery.

Cptn Swain: @Galon> ::Motions him towards a panel with a number of what appear to be sticky notes::

Tandaris Admiran: @ What about automation?

Fae: :: patches camelot Ops into Laarell's station. ::

Charlotte Matsumura: ::finalizing rotations, tees up the first team, sending out the activation message::

Fae: You have Camelot, Laarell.

Laarell: ::wondering exactly what the Dominion managed to figure out, sends in her request to the database:: Thank you, Lieutenant.

Cptn Swain: @Galon> The Vorta included a number of automation protocals, but as things break or simply need repairs it has been difficult for us to keep the automation active.

Taryn Castell: ::She checked her list of extra supplies needed and sent a message to have them delivered to the transporter room. Away Team kits were already waiting to be picked up on the way out.::

Tandaris Admiran: @::turns to one of his team:: Get me some universal translators for these people.

Tandaris Admiran: @::begins wandering through the room, inspecting different panels, seemingly at random, and investigating various read-outs::

Tandaris Admiran: @::also randomly touches stuff::

Cptn Swain: @Galon> NO! Don't touch that!

Tandaris Admiran: @::pauses:: Oh, what does that do?

Rue Wydown: ::making a quick check list, then moving to her office so she can contact the disaster relief control one more time before departure::

Cptn Swain: @Galon> That releases the magnetic constrictors to the primary turbines.

Tandaris Admiran: @ Of course it does. And that's why there's no warning sign or requirement to enter a command authorization … ::shakes his head:: Dominion engineering. It's like the people running this place were brainwashed into believing their superiors were gods or something.

Tandaris Admiran: @::smiles weakly at Galon:: That was a joke.

Cptn Swain: @Galon> ::Unsure of what to make of this spotted engineer::

Laarell: ::enables the uplink::

Rue Wydown: <q>Let's hope we're not sending our people down into chaos. ::confirms with the marine squad that they're also ready to go and then opens a channel to the disaster relief command center, what little there is of it, and starts preparations on that end::

Cptn Swain: @Galon> The last quake was fairly strong. We believe it might have damaged one of the primary exhaust lines in the southerns quadrant... ::points to a status board::

Cptn Swain: @Galon> We preformed an emergency venting of the secondary steam lines directly into the atmosphere.

Cptn Swain: Have we been able to determine the epicenter of the quake?

Taryn Castell: ::Opens a comm to the cargo bay to see to things there, making sure everything was prepped.::

Tandaris Admiran: @::squints at the display:: Well we can immediately mitigate future damage by using the ship's phasers to relieve pressure points before they become a problem near the facility.

Tandaris Admiran: @ And we can get some portable shield generators down here to strengthen the integrity of the facility itself.

Charlotte Matsumura: ::uploading the schedules to the XO, so that she can coordinate with the incident command::

Laarell: Aye, Sir. Would you like us to send the coordinates down? I imagine they've triangulated on their own as well...

Cptn Swain: @Galon> ::frowns:: Is that a good idea to begin shooting the ground with lasers, I mean you could destablize the planets geology even further...

Tandaris Admiran: @ If I'm reading the display correctly, I believe those are standard T-5220 conduits in use throughout Dominion installations. We should have the fabrication plans on file.

Cptn Swain: ACTION> An engineering lackey's tricorder detects an unusually large amount of radiation for a geothermal plant.

Charlotte Matsumura: ::checking the security frequencies their own responders are using, to try and make sure that Excal officers have access::

Tandaris Admiran: @::Galon:: And shut off that beeping.

Cptn Swain: @Galon> What beeping?

Tandaris Admiran: @::realizes the beeping is coming from nearby:: Oh, sorry. That's us. ::White:: Exactly what is the nature of your beeping?

Tandaris Admiran: White> Radiation exposure alert, sir.

Cptn Swain: They might not have, I don't think they have kind of technology we have.

Cptn Swain: Where was it anyway?

Cptn Swain: (( two minute warning ))

Rue Wydown: Search and rescue is going to have their work cut out for them. ::frowning, looking over the gear list::

Tandaris Admiran: @ Ah, radiation exposure. Oh. Radiation exposure. ::moves around to another display, tapping it to bring up a cross-section of the plant, then interfaces his tricorder and uses it to display the radiation distribution::

Cptn Swain: @Galon> ::lifts brows::

Tandaris Admiran: @::Galon:: You should probably evacuate this facility of all non-essential personnel.

Cptn Swain: @Galon> What's wrong?

Rue Wydown: :;packing up her own supply kit and heads out of her office to head down to the transporter room::

Tandaris Admiran: @::Galon:: Those exhaust lines you mentioned appear to be leaking radioactive fluid.

Laarell: It was near a small town. Halvor, I believe it's called. It's in one of the mountain valleys in the rift zone.

Laarell: I suspect that the valley might be a branch off the major fault line running nearby. It's a mining area, mostly.

Cptn Swain: @Galon> But how, there isn't anything radioactive in the plant itself, it's geothermal energy nothing reactive even down here...

Cptn Swain: Mining? Now that's interesting.

Cptn Swain: Are they active mines?

Laarell: ::small shrug:: Yes, I suppose so... They're not large-scale, but they have been in place for awhile.

Tandaris Admiran: @::blinks at Galon::

Tandaris Admiran: @::opens mouth, closes it::

Cptn Swain: PAUSE SIM

Cptn Swain: PAUSE SIM

Cptn Swain: PAUSE SIM

Cptn Swain: And the plot thickens!

Cptn Swain: So medical, marines and security are heading down to help with relief efforts; engineering is finding the situation to be more complicated than they thought; science is looking into the volcanic activity.

Cptn Swain: We'll pick up there next week, any questions?

Taryn Castell: Nope.

Laarell: TBS?

Cptn Swain: A few minutes.

Rue Wydown: Any other questions?

Cptn Swain: If not, have a good week~!
