A Strange Obsession

This log takes place during the last sim.

A Strange Obsession

The orb's strange glowing had subsided, but Murak's fascination had not.

"I am telling you, no good will come of this." The portly Haliian snatched her husband's half-eaten dinner from the table with a grunt and tossed the remnants in the recycler. Murak continued to stare at the translucent blue oval before him. "Take that thing back," she continued, her volume up a notch. "It is no good, I tell you. No good! You've been obsessed since you brought it home."

Since he seemed oblivious to her ranting, she eased her heavy frame into the chair opposite him at the table and tried a different tack. "Where did you get it, anyway?"

As thin as she was portly, Murak picked up the stone to cradle it in one hand, caressing it with his long fingers. "You are correct, my wife. It is different. It is like a canar,* but not... quite."

"Puh!" She snorted with a dismissive wave of her hand. "It is not even remotely a canar. When you hold it I feel nothing. So again I am asking... where did you get it?"

"I see... a place. Strange, yet familiar. A people. Different, but...." The male Haliian's eyes glazed over, his head began to loll.

"Murak! Put. It. Down!" Snatching it from him, she pressed it back into its box, closed the lid and fixed the latch. "Where did you get it?"

Murak jerked up, his eyes shifted once... then twice, as though he were coming out of a trance. Taking another moment to catch his breath, he combed his hair back with his fingers and stared at the table for a moment before responding. "Ichigo's. I saw it in the window and... could not pass."

A disgusted grunt accompanied her reaching for a jug of ale. "And how much did you pay? A weeks' wages? A month's?"

"Price? It was a good price. I think. Barely thirty credits. And for such a stone...." He reached for the box but did not unlatch it. "There was another there before me. He wore a dark cloak. I could not allow him to purchase it. It is so perfect. So smooth. Like... a pearl of Ossian V."

"So first it is a canar, and now it is a pearl." The jug hit the table with a thud. "We're out thirty credits for nothing. And you'll never get out of the mines. And... if it's such a valuable piece, why did he almost give it away, eh? Tell me that."

Murak shrugged. "He didn't like it. Said it gave him a headache."

"Puh! It gives me also a headache and it's made you crazy. You've barely eaten. You have stared at it all day. First it's a canar and now it's a pearl. Next you'll be telling me we can sell it for a fortune, kiss that schuntra Nero good-bye, and live in luxury for the rest of our lives on our own far-away planet. Take it back. Give him back his headache."

A long silence confirmed his bondmate's charges. "You are right," he said after a long sigh. "The wiles of that pirate Ichigo clouded my judgement. Again. I will take it back..." The latch firmly set, Murak stood to slip the box containing the stone into a nearby drawer. "...tomorrow."
