“Garnoopy Alpha-1”

 

Was it a form of mutiny to lock out a ship’s commanding officer, executive officer, and all department heads from the main computer core of their starship? Garnoopy assumed that it was under normal circumstances but these circumstances were not normal. Personally though Garnoopy didn’t care one way or another. The Admiral may have issued the order to not resist the Romulans but Garnoopy was going to defy that and make one major resistant action.  

 

He quickly tapped his engineering panel and pulled up the main computer core’s control systems. The main computer core was the brain of the Manticore. Without that computer the ship would be useless. Anyone person who didn’t have access to the main computer core could not order coffee, let alone set a heading for the ship to fly.

 

His plan was a simple one, Garnoopy was going to encrypt and lock down the main computer core to all but a few authorized users. The Manticore’s memory banks had several different programs which could do this, however, since Melville had known their shield and torpedo frequency Garnoopy did not doubt that Melville would know all about the Manticore’s security programs. The time had come for Garnoopy to change that fact.  

 

Accessing the memory banks he brought up program Security Alpha-1. This program was the most complex encryption and lockdown sequence that the Manticore held. No person who didn’t have authorization could access the main computer core or shut down the security lockout program. Once initiated only the commanding officer, executive officer, and department heads had any access to any ship function.

 

In this present situation this was not a good thing. This list of specified people who would have access were about to be taken hostage and most likely taken off the Manticore to be tortured by the Romulans. Having those personnel be the only ones who could access the main computer core would mean almost certain death to the security detail that was being left behind to eventually retake the ship.  

 

Tapping his panel Garnoopy quickly created a file which he titled Garnoopy Alpha-1. He copied the program Security Alpha-1 to the new file and began to edit the source code. One by one he deleted authorization codes to the program.

Once Garnoopy initiated his program Garnoopy Alpha-1 none of these personnel would have access to any part of the main computer core though they would not know it until they tried to enter their authorization code and the computer denied them access.  

 

He quickly continued to edit the program and began to enter the authorization codes of the 12 remaining personnel that were in the security force. Garnoopy realized though that he had no idea who those 12 people were at this time, so he could not give them all access.

 

Time was running out as he heard phaser fire break out behind him. He had no choice but to enter the code of anyone who he was already certain was remaining and hope they would give the rest of the team access before it was too late.

Only these four people would have any control over the Manticore’s main computer core. The ship would be in their hands once the program was activated.

 

Garnoopy’s tracks were everywhere. Melville would know instantly that the base program Security Alpha-1 had been initiated but when he went to get the access codes from the Co, Xo, or department heads he would find that the codes didn’t work. Upon closer inspection Melville would discover that Garnoopy had hacked the program, but Melville would have no idea who now had control over the main computer core.

 

Garnoopy knew that he himself could hack his own program and give himself or anyone else authorization to the main computer core. However, Garnoopy would never do so and the Romulans, despite the knowledge from Melville would not be able to hack it. They did not know what Garnoopy had done to the base program so they would have no knowledge of how to change the changes that had been made.

 

More phaser fire broke out behind Garnoopy and he realized that time was running out. The hum of transporters was heard and phaser fire hit Garnoopy square on the back. He flew forward smashing into his panel and then slumped to the ground.

 

He managed to pull his head up only see Ensign Tino get hit and go down.

 

Gasping for breath Garnoopy managed to call out “Computer, activate program Garnoopy Alpha-1.”

 

The world swirled before his eyes and Garnoopy heard the computer respond with an affirmative, but he had no time to think about the consequences for everything went black at that point.
