"The 'Full' Exam"

"The 'Full' Exam"

Taryn pulled her medical tricorder from the pocket of her lab coat, opening it to take some scans of their new Chief of Security. "Computer, begin bioscan, level one, Mesner, Ryan, Lieutenant Commander." She glanced to the biofeedback screen over the bed, before returning her attention to Ryan. "Don't worry, this shouldn't hurt... much." She smiled.

"I'd hope not," He stated sarcastically. "It takes some skill to turn a tricorder into a deadly weapon. Still...it would still be better then my last examination."

"Typically, I've found that you security types don't like to visit sickbay, even when you need medical attention. I was surprised to see you down here so quickly. Normally, I'd have to send a dozen reminders, especially to a department head." She smirked.

"Yes, well I kinda have this thing for attractive females, and your voice did not disappoint. That and you saved me from having to negotiate giving Major Cloud his weapons back. Marines..." He snorted. "Combat Security Officers who don't get any of the annoying work."

"You sound jealous," she pointed out. Moving her wand over his head, she checked the readings on her tricorder before shifting it to scan lower. Teasingly, she said, "I thought we were all on the same team, here. What weapons did you steal from the marines?"

"Oh I didn't steal anything. One of the twenty-odd people in the chain of responsibility of getting our supplies from Mars docks to Excalibur messed up and we got a small arms locker of Marine weapons, and they one of ours. It's not really even a big deal, but when dealing with them, it's important to establish dominance in the relationship early." He nodded eagerly as he watched her scans.

"Ah, I see." She popped the wand back into her tricorder, closed it, and tucked it into her pocket. "Two boys competing to see who has the biggest... department. So you are holding out to show him you have the control, then? I thought marines were not to be trifled with. Can't they kill you with their bare hands?" She gestured to his uniform. "Would you mind taking your shirt off for me, please?"

"I happen to be a skilled solider myself, thank you very much," He paused to remove his uniform top, revealing a well chiseled body. "Starfleet Security was around a hell of a lot longer then the Marines...they just took all our specialists and gave them a 'better then you attitude. It would be like Starfleet giving all the pediatricians their own department, which competed with yours for like...biobeds...or something."

She laughed. "That is an amusing idea. An entire squadron of pediatricians, armed with baby monitors and lollipops. Lie down, please." She seemed immune to his muscular form, giving it only as much notice as necessary while she calibrated her sensors. "Could you kill a man with your bare hands?" One eyebrow lifted.

"I suppose...if the situation demanded it," He stated with a furrowed brow, considering the idea. "Though I don't tend to advertise bare handed fights to the death, phasers are much quicker, and more efficient."

"And so much more civilized," she pointed out. With him prone on the bed, she pulled the swing arm over his chest and activated the program. "Lie as still as possible and just breathe normally." While the scan worked, she studied the readings on the monitor. "Where were you stationed before Excalibur?"

He managed to stay still, but his eyes were looking all over the device curiously. "Starfleet Academy in San Francisco for the last couple years. I taught military history, and the occasional odd class here and there. The Hyperion was my last deep space posting, before that."

"A teacher? Curious. I would have never pegged you as a teacher. You've kept in good physical condition despite the lack of action." With the scan complete, she pushed the scanner aside and motioned for him to sit up. Her fingers were warm against his skin as she began placing tiny wireless sensors to his chest and abdomen. "What got you back on a starship?"

"The old CSEC," He trailed off, watching her fingers. "Garrison something. He decides to resign his commission at the last possible moment, and some egg head in personnel decides that I'd be the best replacement. So, my options were: Take the job, or serve brig time for dereliction of duty. Not much of a choice there."

"Well, I hope that teaching didn't make you soft," she said, smirking. "From what I hear of this ship, the last thing it needs is an indecisive Chief of Security. Hop off the bed and we'll do a quick stress test on you to complete the exam. How about you run in place. I'll tell you when to stop."

"Trust me, I'm anything but soft." He began awkwardly jogging in place. "I've been letting you ask twenty questions while getting to know the inner workings of my body, I believe it's my turn. What brings you to the Excalibur?"

"I requested a transfer." She leaned casually against the bed, watching him as he 'ran'. Occasionally, she glanced to the monitors, watching his heart rate and saturation levels. "Doctor Dubois comes from a family of geneticists, which happens to be my specialty. I thought if any CMO would appreciate my work, it would be her. I could have gone into research, but I prefer the humanitarian aspects of being a doctor. Helping people, you know." Her smile seemed ever present. "I was born on a ship and will probably die on one."

"Geneticist huh? Good thing I decided to hold my tongue about that genetic material comment earlier. Well, I'll try to make sure that this isn't this ship you die on." He flashed a smirk. "So, am I stressed enough yet? This running in place is getting a bit tedious."

Watching his readings, she nodded. "You can stop running now, but we're not quite done. Drop and give me ten push-ups so we can check your muscular toxicity levels." She turned to watch. Technically, push-ups weren't part of the exam, but it was enjoyable to watch the way his muscles bunched.

He did as he was told, though in the back of his mind, wondering what exactly this had to do with anything. Doing the push-ups rather quickly, he hopped back into a standing position. "So then, is this your first Akira Class?"

"Yep!" Why are boys always interested in the class of ship? It is the people inside that matter. She removed the tiny sensors and put them in the sterilizer for cleaning. Removing a hypospray from one of the kit drawers, she ran her fingers over the cartridges until she found the one she wanted. "I memorized the layout, but haven't had a chance to go exploring, yet. It seems like an efficient floorplan."

Popping the cartridge in, she primed it for the proper dosage. "Your potassium and phosphate levels could be higher. I'm going to give you a boost and want you back here in a week to check them again. It might be dietary."

"Mmm yes, potassium and phosphate, can't let that go unchecked." He smiled. "Well, since you're new to the class and all, how about I give you a tour? I served on the Thunderchild for four years fresh out of the academy, I know all the interesting little nooks and crannies the schematics wont show you."

She pressed the hypo to his neck and injected. "That sounds like it might be fun. Though I wonder if you would have extended the same courtesy if my genetic makeup had been... inferior." She gazed at him expectantly.

"Probably, but I'd have more moral intentions" He answered honestly, with a smirk.

"Well, at least you're honest," she said with a chuckle. "Since we're going to have a couple of days free while we're at DS9, I'll let you know when I'm not busy." She gestured to his discarded shirt. "You are free to go. Clean bill of health, other than the slight anomalies that we discussed."

"Thanks," He said, collecting his things, dressing himself. "Y'know, Dr. Dubois made the full exam sound a lot more ominous."

"That was just to make you behave." She paused. "Unless you want additional testing? We could check your colon health with an in-depth internal probe. You are certainly at an age to be concerned with developing certain conditions." She grinned broadly.

"You'll have to wait until at least the second date to probe my colon, darlin'." He couldn't help but grin in return, before moving towards the door. "Don't forget to call now!" He yelled as he exited sickbay.

"Yes, I'll get right on that," Taryn said to herself, smirking as she saved the readings of his exam to his medical file. She clucked her tongue as she reviewed them again. "But how could I ever trust a man that doesn't keep track of his potassium levels?"
