Thinking about this more and more and how you all say its great to do this academy sim trying to invision this idea's and still staying true to star trek it will not work. I have always thought Star Trek as a more mature show then most of that crap out there. It take a board unstanding to understand trek and if we put these ideas in it would destroy what we already love and demolish the seriousness to please the masses.   :)

I disagree, Nem.  With good writing and direction, many of the ideas above would be phenomenal.

The true appeal for most is a ship and its crew braving a new frontier that no one had ever seen before for even DS9 which was a space station had the wormhole and the defiant and going further but the ideas discribed wouldn't give it to as great of a way as the other series.

I think Paramount does read these boards.

I know that plotlines from personal logs and private ships have mysteriously shown up in actual shows....

The CEO of Paramount is an STSF simmer?

They don't have to be a simmer to read the boards...

I agree, Stardust, and you know what?  If I were a writer, *I* would browse the ship boards.  The creativity here is a wealth of ideas and inspiration.

Are you saying I can't write scripts on my own and I need some simmers to give me ideas I'm just insulted. :) we writers would never be caught on the boards

Hey there,

You forget Nemesis that for the longest time, Star Trek took script submissions from non-contracted writers. These episodes were produced because their on-staff writers simply couldn't come up with new material.

As for if writers read these boards, I have no idea. I do know that other Trek forums have reported such things and there's clear evidence to support it. Now if it actually happened, who knows. But...never say never. :)

Finally getting sucked into this discussion...

First, I suspect that someone (or several someones) at Paramount does read message boards.  Perhaps not these in particular, but certainly the boards over at st.com, and probably those at major 'net community locales like AOL or other big providers.    I don't think they specifically go looking for story ideas, because there are all sorts of legal copyright issues involved there and I sure they'd rather not give their lawyers extra work -- especially extra work that may wind up costing them money.   I suspect they look for public opinion, though.  For example, rewind four years.  VOY is almost over and they're thinking up a new show.  They brainstorm up a bunch of ideas and their two favorites are, say, the first Federation ships and a kind of Starfleet JAG.   So then the readers go out, look over the various discussions, come back and report something like, "Well, everyone's really curious about the Vulcans and stuff after First Contact, they wanna know more about how the Federation got started."   Poof -- Enterprise.   But if that hadn't been an idea on the table already, it probably wouldn't have happened.

Secondly, I like the idea of an Academy show.   It could conceivably spiral into a sort of SbtB/90210/Dawson's Creek problem, but (correct me if I'm wrong here) I was under the impression that the Academy was older students -- college rather than high school.  (For all we like to put "accepted to SF Acad at age 16" in our bios around here...)   At that age, there's a better potential for serious character development, rather than twisted romantic angst.  And these are people who are preparing to go out and do a very serious job in which they may be risking their lives -- SF is the Federation's military, even if the primary mission is exploration (which is no less dangerous, as we've seen.)

I'd like to see such a show follow both cadets and teachers, and make sure the cadets weren't all wunderkinds.  (::cough::Wesley::cough::)  They should have weaknesses and strengths, like everyone else.  And there should be problems -- I haven't seen it in ages, but I rather liked that TNG ep about the cadet who died because Wesley's squadron was stupid, and the fallout from that.   Also I'd like to see something about the professors, because I think it'd be interesting to know why they were at the Academy.  Yeah, there should be some who are there because a) they wanted a desk job or :) they genuinely like teaching, but there could also be someone who was on temporary assignment there because of a physical or psychological trauma in the field, and they're on recovery, or something like that.

To my knowledge, at least through the Voyager years, Paramount was still accepting outside scripts. Some of the now staff writers were hired after script sumbissions. How do I know this? On the ST cruise I went on, I took the writing workshop.. that was taught by two guys who had submitted scripts and later were hired. (One as a staff writer, the other as an assistant to Ron Moore). I even have signed copies of the scripts.

I am sure they will open up Enterprise to scripts at some point in the future.

In the meantime, there is a yearly short story contest. The winner gets published and gets to work with the staff writers to create a show script. Runners up are just published in a book of short stories. (At least thats the way it used to work.)

And yes... I am positive boards are read for information on what the viewing public and fans want to see (and not to see). Not that they always follow our great ideas. And I know from personal experience that they do read the boards at least at aol. I have (or had) email and SNs for several members of the cast and crew. Kim used to show up regularly in ST chat rooms on AOL, and even came to a private sim I used to be on. (I have a great pic of him from the lifeboat that is hysterical).

And who can blame them? Look at all the creative ideas here. :)

I am going with Fred on this, and a series with Riker would be the perfect venue for such a series...just one more request though...we get some one new running the program, I don't think I can handle another Berman and Bragga Production...becuase I am sure that about the fourth season that the Enterprise crew will meet the Borg    ::):

Funny yes, but already suggested by one of the ST guests that was as Shoreleave a few years ago. When they were kicking around ideas for a new series, before they had decided on "Enterprise", the guest had suggested a 1 hour sitcom each week, called "The Rikers". Of course, they'd have to constantly have Lawaxana stopping by to complain about Deanna's decor and cooking, but hey.....

::pulls chance card:: Go go jail, go directly to jail. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200.

Hey Huff....remember we got Mojo to make us a little blue planet in a golden nebula in Voyager, for that Janeway/Hepburn joke? We at least got a joke on the ship.

Not to mention a few others we've seen used ...eh?

How about a prequel to the prequel?

It can be set in the year 2003 and can show Trekkers watching Star Trek.

They actually made a movie like that not 2003 of course but it starred william shatner. I can't remember the title but it was about a very obsessed Trekker and so fourth. :)

So how many of you have seen episode ideas from forums and whatnot end up as actual episodes? Tell us about them. :)

My character was stolen by Trek in that TNG episode with the race called "Delpins"...a Starfleet officer named "Xiang" was seen briefly floating at one of the rear science stations on the Enterprise D.

I dont remember which episode so just watch them all and keep your eyes open he is only visible for 1/8 of a second.

Have fun!
