Personal History

Born in 2349 as the second child of Gregory and Nicole Mesner. Ryan grew up in New Berlin, one of the major cities on Luna, Earth's moon. Idolizing his father from his early youth, Ryan joined Starfleet intent on becoming an engineer. However, at the urging of his older brother Ryan changed his focus to follow his brother and become a security officer. This created a rift between the father and son, which was only magnified when Ryan's brother was killed in early 2374 at the Second Battle of Chintoka.

Graduating among the top of his class in 2370, Ryan was posted to the USS Intrepid, ship of the line of the new Intrepid class for a year long shakedown. Noted for his excellent tactical thinking, Ryan was promoted to Lieutenant, Junior Grade and posted to the USS Thunderchild following the Intrepid's shakedown. In early 2373 Lieutenant Mesner took a six month leave from the Thunderchild to participate in Starfleets Advanced Tactical Training following Captain Matsuda's recomendation. (Starfleet Advanced Tactical Training is a grueling six month training course. The only way to participate is to be recomended by a member of command staff, holding the rank of Commander or higher.) Ryan would remain on the ship until 2376, and the ship would participate in several major battles of the Dominion War, including the Borg invasion and subsequent battle at Sector 001. Showing amazing tactical prowess in aiding in the destruction of the Borg Cube, Ryan would be awarded the Grankite order of Tactics, and promoted to full Lieutenant following the battle.

Ryan became the the Thunderchild's tactical officer following that battle, a position he would hold until the end of the war, becoming the Chief of Security in 2375 following the retirement of Lieutenant Commander Al-Garth. The transition from Tactical to Chief of Security was not easy. Mesner had spent the majority of his career at Tactical, and reports from Captain Matsuda indicated that Ryan often had difficulties with the broader range of responsiblities and duties that Chief of Security held. Mesner himself would be promoted to Lieutenant Commander the following year. Shortly after his promotion, Ryan transfered to the Betazed Campus of Starfleet Academy to teach Ship to Ship combat strategy, and Dominion battle tactics.

While teaching at the Academy, Ryan himself redoubled his efforts at becoming a better Security officer, culminating in an aquired Masters in Starship Tactical Applications and a Bachelors in Federation Military History. In 2380, after four years of teaching on Betazed, Ryan was transfered to the USS Hyperion, the third Prometheus Class launched as Chief of Security. While the flaws that had plauged his previous stint as Chief had been corrected, Ryan still found the position somewhat unfulfilling, and transfered off the ship after just two years. Returning the the Academy, this time at the San Fransico campus, Ryan took advantage of his recently earned degrees, teaching mostly Federation Military History. Recently, Ryan has been placed on detached assignment to Starfleet Command, likely in preparation for another transfer to ship based duty.
