ShoreLeave East 2011

This is not an official STSF function

Time to prepare for Shore Leave East, held during the Shore Leave convention in Hunt Valley, Maryland from July 8-10. This is an informal gathering of friends who like to get together once a year for chat and camaraderie.

The Shore Leave convention (info can be found at shore-leave.com) is laid-back, relaxing, probably less expensive than most and is the largest fan-run convention. Along with the normal lineup of stars there are workshops, art exhibits, and other activities to occupy your free time over the weekend. The STSF gang usually hang out and talk, occasionally taking in one or two of the star presentations, maybe grab a movie together or a big, embarrassing group meal (or three) and always dancing the night away at 10 Forward dance on Saturday night at the convention.

Stars in the lineup this year (so far) are Christopher Judge, Tricia Helfer, Eddie McClintock, John de Lancie, Gary Lockwood, Sally Kellerman and Cliff Simon

We like to try and keep track of our own little (unofficial) group, so if anyone is planning on attending AND they want the rest of the group to know about it, please drop me an e-mail at [email protected] and I can add you to the Shoreleave mailstring.

Road trip! The guests are usually from all kinds of sci fi, but this years actor group strikes me as "really eclectic":

Christopher Judge (SG-1)

Eddie McClintock (Warehouse 13)

Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica)

John de Lancie (Trek's Favorite Q)

Emilie Ullerup (BSG/Sanctuary)

Gary Lockwood (2001, Star Trek)

Sally Kellerman (Star Trek, MASH)

Cliff Simon (SG-1)

Could be wrong, but I'm predicting the two Stargaters, Tricia "Number 6" Helfer, and John "Q" deLancie will be the popular autographs to grab. Gotta give the Classic Trek shout out to Mr. Lockwood and Ms. Kellerman though - Long Live Old School!

Pretty sad when the biggest star at a Trek convention is from BSG. Wasn't it a direct competitor to Enterprise in some markets?

Well...not to add to the downer but the Star Trek hey day took place and passed throughout the 1980's and 1990's. Other then the Big Vegas Trek Con, modern sci fi convention venues are going to go with whatever the popular draw is.

The Creation convention site showcases Trek cons along with Supernatural and Twilight; Trek is no longer the only sci fi offering, obviously. On the flip side, a Trek con is more doable then say a Babylon Five con.

The new Battlestar Galactica is the current template for the modern adult sci fi show. Sure, the big star at a "Former Trek Con" is going to be a BSGer.

To be fair, SL does advertise themselves as a science-fiction convention. They started out as a Trek convention no doubt, but it's not like they're doing false advertising.
