From what I understand, The USS Sovereign was the original Sovereign-class vessel. But, it was later renamed to the USS Enterprise-E.

I could be completely wrong on this... I'm thinking I heard it on one of the Star Trek games I have on my computer. Not sure, though.

most interesting speculation, it could have happened like the defiant, but the new class ship was renamed after the first one was destroyed.

If there was already a starship USS Sovereign, that had already been tested and such, why would the Enterprise E need to be tested for a whole year?

Ok so this may not be the perfect reason, but lets face it, there can be mistakes in the manufacture of any vessel, from what I've seen most federation ships, do seem to at least do 3 to 6 months worth of trials to make sure the vessel is in proper order. Now that being the enterprise I'm sure they wanted to be as through as possible. This, Could, explain its long amount of test time.

Hey there,

Well, recall that the Enterprise 1701 did have to go through a shakedown as well. In fact, I think almost every ship does. In reality, I recall hearing/reading that current U.S. Navy regulations list a ship's first three years of service as it's "shakedown cruise."

I think U.S.S Soveriegn was made for the game bridge commander for the enterprise E had been out when they made the game. Not all starships start out with one of their original name except for they have test vessels which contain that name and are usually destroyed or refit to serve the fleet incase of emergency which I think the test test vessel for the soveriegn was refit for enterprise-E after the destruction of enterprise-D as well the producers just wanted a more modern design for the flag ship of the federation so just made the soveriegn simple but true :D

That might be the case. No offence, but i like galaxy class ships better than sovereign ones.

Hey there,

I simply couldn't disagree more. You look at any example there is in Star Trek, and the first class of a ship seems to be it's namesake. We've seen (I believe) the U.S.S. Constitution, U.S.S. Excelsior, etc.

Furthermore, you look at the modern day Navy. The first ship of a design is always the namesake. Case and point, the "Nemitz Class Aircraft Carrier" featured the U.S.S. Nemitz.

As for the "flagship," I'd question if the 1701-E is the flagship of the Federation. I think it's shortsided to think that simply because a ship has the name Enterprise it's the fleet's flagship. The pre-refit 1701 was not the flagship of the Federation, though I do believe the 1701-A was implied to be it. The 1701-B was never mentioned as the flagship, and I'd doubt they'd let Harriman CO it if it was. Serious doubts about the 1701-C's status as Starfleet's Flagship. While the 1701-D was indeed the flagship of the Federation, a lot changed before the 1701-E was commissioned.

As for the Sovereign Class itself, you have to go back to the ships we were seeing on DS9 around the time of Generations. The "sleaker" Akira like designs were not yet mainstream. I think this shows that Starfleet was just then beginning to get these newer classes into production/built. As a result, if there had been a Sovereign Class vessel even completed when the Enterprise-D was destroyed, it probably would have been nothing more than an NX.

In fact, when you think about it, it makes sense. Between Generations and First Contact, two years (and two weeks) pass. Given Geordi's remark, that means for one solid year there was no U.S.S. Enterprise. Now, given what one can say about starship construction, it makes logistical sense to assume it hadn't been built yet. :)

Yes the Enterprise-E is the flag ship of the federation I've gotten it from several sources for here is the offical bio of the soveriegn from SFC3 "The soveriegn-class vessel is the most advanced ship in use in the starfleet today and functions as the current FLAGSHIP of the Federation. Featuring elements researched as a part of the advanced starship intitiative in order to react to future borg incursions, the soveriegn, at nearly 700 meters in length, is the largest and most impressive starship in the fleet. Designed as a multi-function vessel, the Soveriegn is equipped with advanced weapons platforms and upgraded sensor and shield systems. It is effective both as an exploratory and research vessel as well as a front-line combat vessel.

Notable Sovereign-class vessels include the federation flagship U.S.S Enterprise NCC 1701-E, which stopped the Borg from interfering with Earth's timeline after the Borg incursiob in 2373, and the U.S.S Sovereign NCC-73811, which served a major role in the Kessok insident."

So I guess we are both right as well both wrong now we both have learned :D

Hey there,

Unless the sources were out of a TV or movie, which I haven't personally been able to find, it isn't considered "factual" in the Trek universe. Cannon law I suppose would apply...and I don't think SFC3 would count. :D

I'll stick to what I said earlier. I haven't seen any solid evidence to support the 1701-E is the actual "flagship" of Starfleet.

Hey there,

Again, it doesn't matter. There's a ton of Trek material out there in print, video games, etc. Unless something's changed, the only material taken as 100% factual and considered cannon is what we've seen in TV and movies.  :)

Hey,

Fred is right with the canon stuff.  There are enough oddball tidbits in Games and Novels to proablably create an A-Z list of Starfleet Classes.  The easiest and...most accepted approach is to go by the television series that are on TV.  There are even inconsistencies in the so called "reference books" such as the Star Trek Encyclopedia or The DS9 technical manual.  Yet without those...few reference books..I suppose I wouldn't know the name of my favorite class ..Akira!
