Star Wars 3-D

Several websites and articles on the ‘Net are reporting that there are plans in the works from Lucasfilm to re-release all six of the Star Wars films in 3-D.

In my opinion, I don’t see how 3-D would contribute anything of value to the six films. I mean, most of us – and I’m including Star Wars and Star Trek fans in that - have seen them before, and the only thing the 3-D would add is a pretty factor.

….do we really need light sabers VZZZZMMM-ing off the screen at us? Really?

I can understand a new Star Wars film set in the Clone Wars Animated era given the 3-D treatment, but converting the original trilogy and prequel trilogy is a huge waste of space, so to speak.

And what about tweaking something to the point of it being useless? If you keep picking at a work of art or a project or what have you, sometimes you can get it to the point where it’s completely messed up.

George Lucas runs a risk of completely losing the original parameters of all the Warsie movies.

Georgie just wants more money...

Agreed. It was bad enough he totally altered what was a fairly consistent and approved semi-canonical backstory with the Fall of the Republic, the Rise of the Empire, and the Clone Wars when he did his prequels. And while I like Ewan MacGregor as a young Obi Wan (he had the same panache, a bit forced at times, but as good as Sir Alec), Hayden Christiansen and Natalie Portman didn't work.

Awkward. Definitely awkward!

I thought the worst thing was actually filming with Hayden Christiansen in braces. Invisible they were not.

I wish he would get around to that live action TV series already.

I'm not convinced 3D is here to stay, anyway.

3-D viewing is annoying. ::shrugs:: Come on holodeck technology!

I have never seen one of these 3-D movies in recent history. I've seen what 3-d looks like on books and pages, and I'm not impressed.

More than anything, I find it disappointing that so many movies depend on spectacle over substance. I prefer to watch my movies in 2-D so that I get a clear visual picture, and I prefer to see what the story is about. "Avatar" is a great example of visuals over substance - I've never seen it, but the reviews are clear. The visuals are amazing to the point of "eye-gasmic", but the story is trite and re-hashed. It is as if no one ever considers writing a story where people actually tackle the difficult challenges, prefering to stay on more well-worn paths while using specacle to keep us distracted from the fact that we're mentally bored.

It's a mixed bag. 3D works in something that also has a good story like Avitar, but Jackass? Come on. Who really wants to see someone peeing into the camera in 3D?

Something like 30% of the movie going audience can't process the 3-D imagry anyway.

3D goes straight to my stomach for some reason. I can get through IMAX, but 3D is just no good for me.

The thing is, it'll cost them 10 million to do it all, and they'll bank 100 million per movie. I mean, I understand from an artistic point of view why you wouldn't want to do it, but from a monetary standpoint, why not?

My biggest regret is that the Thrawn based books were never made into movies. You could probably make Vision and Specter work from a practical point a view considering the ages of the original cast, but the original 3 Zahn books would be difficult to do.

I think the Rogue Squadron series might be interesting as films. They don't feature the original cast (I.E no one would get hung up with someone other than Denis Lawson playing Wedge). And at least I found them entertaining.

I'm currently working my way through the 'Wraith Squadron' section of the Rogue novels; I'd welcome the X-Wing series being made into film. It'd make my inner starfighter pilot geek very happy.
