"Cat Problems and a Move"

Here's another of my fun-filled logs. Enjoy, folks. :D

=/\=BEGIN LOG=/\=

Demore was overseeing the installation of the new Cat-5 subsystem. From what he understood, the Corp of Engineers weren’t too happy that this was being done at such a crucial time, with the station being moved. But, the installation of the Cat-5 system should not affect anything beyond the confines of the Renc Wing. I’m lacking faith in my team, but I know they can get the job done… sooner or later.

He looked at the PADD from Starfleet Command that had what the Cat-5 system was supposed to do. He tapped a few buttons, and brought up the summary.

----------------------------

CAT-5 SUBSYSTEM: VERSION 2.1

PROPERTY OF STARFLEET COMMAND

Note: This version of the Cat-5 Subsystem is Version 2.1. For a list of changes since all earlier versions, alpha versions, and beta versions, access the “Further Documentation” section of this PADD.

Note: Cat-5 Subsystem Version 2.1 is the newest stable version of the Cat-5 Subsystem. For Alpha releases for version 2.2, access the “Further Documentation” section of this PADD. Starfleet recommends NOT using the Alpha version on any active system.

The Cat-5 Subsystem v2.1 is the newest stable version of the Cat-5 system. It carries the newest updated version of the LCARS data retrieval system from Starfleet. Capable of instantaneous dataflow on all terminals in the Renc Wing (Engineering section), the Cat-5 Subsystem will allow for faster computer response, calculations, and information readout throughout the station.

Engineering consoles will be able to instantaneously work together. Multiple consoles will now be able to access the same information in real-time. This would allow for better Engineer training, and for multiple users to work on the same program at the same time, decreasing the amount of time needed to finish a project.

The update will also need to be installed on the Central System Computer, located on the Main Engineering deck, located through Jefferies tube 11-NG3 (this is a secure Jefferies tube). Security authorization of a Lieutenant Commander or higher will be required to access the Jefferies tube 11-NG3, and required to install the Cat-5 Subsystem into the Central Computer Mainframe. The installation should not be noticeable anywhere on the ship (i.e. No power, computer, or any other problems aboard the station should be noted as caused by the Cat-5 Subsystem install on the Central Computer Mainframe).

This project can be difficult. However, this installation is a prudent course of action for the further study and development of Federation technology. Due to the loss of many subfiles and subdatabases due to the execution of Lieutenant Commander GromVik’s “Bug” program throughout the station, installing the Cat-5 Subsystem would be the most logical course of action. Instead of reinstalling Aegis subfiles and subdatabases the were originally developed for the station over 2 years ago, the Cat-5 subsystem can be installed as an upgrade to the station. The installation of the Cat-5 subsystem is the logical course of action.

Note: The Cat-5 subsystem will only be installed on consoles located in the Renc Wing (Engineering). However, ALL consoles throughout the station will be able to perform most of the tasks listed, after the Cat-5 Subsystem is installed on the Central Computer Mainframe.

Note: The new LCARS that will be installed with the Central Computer Mainframe installation to ALL consoles aboard the station looks considerably different than the LCARS used aboard the station at this time. It is possible that the crew will have to learn how to access the new LCARS. It is recommended that an Engineering team open a temporary class in a large room to help train crewmembers on how to use the new LCARS design.

--------------------------------------

Demore skimmed over the summary, and liked what he saw.

He looked around for the Engineering team, which was installing a Cat-5 subsystem into console 3-A, on the third floor of Engineering. The team had gotten 17 installs complete, but none would be noticeable until the install on the Central Computer Mainframe was complete.

We still had the Holodeck module problem. It seems that, when the Holodeck module is installed, the console tries to access the Holodeck database and load a program. This causes a console overload, because it cannot run a holographic program within the console. This has caused the loss of 6 consoles, all in the process of being fixed and returned to the department. Luckily, no injuries have been noted. Engineering Crewman Matt Lucas is working on the Holodeck module now, trying to figure out why the console is accessing the Holodeck database.

There had been some previous problems with Crewman Lucas, but he has seemed to behave down here in Engineering. But, he did try to access a secure area of the Cat-5 subsystem that he is not authorized to access. He said it was an accident – he was simply going through all areas of the Cat-5 subsystem looking for a cause to the Holodeck module problem. He was simply accessing directories, one after another, and wasn’t paying attention when he tried to access the secure database.

This event with Crewman Lucas has been logged, and I gave him a warning. If he again tries to access a secure area of the Cat-5 subsystem, he will be booted from the team. If it was an accident, he needs to be paying more attention. Secure directories are clearly marked as “SECURE”. Crewman Lucas’ background is not at all “satisfactory”.

The station has also been moved. There have been no noticeable Engineering problems since the move, except for the floor plates shaking rapidly on deck 7. This has been corrected, in case of another move. The reason behind the problem was because of a tug that tractor beamed 4 meters left of the correct place, causing two tractor beams to run into one another – deck seven. This caused problems with the stability of the deck plates. A better search of the locked positions of the tugs will be conducted next time the station is moved.

Overall, Engineering is running smoothly. No major problems have been reported. The biggest happening in the Renc Wing has been the installation of the Cat-5 subsystem, which will be going on for several days. The final step will be to install the subsystem on the Central Computer Mainframe, which will also be the hardest step. I, myself, will be working with the Engineering crew on that installation. I will oversee the installation myself, given Commander GromVik’s location status. Midshipman Zertz will also be a factor in the installation, given he is available at that time. I am not expecting to allow Crewman Lucas assist with this installation. To be completely honest, I simply don’t trust him.
