Gage Silver - New Member

Guess it's about time I introduce myself.

Hey, I'm Gage Silver. I'm also known as Ethan Neufeld -- the better part of the PBEM simming world knows me as Ethan Neufeld. I've been simming PBEM style for a while. I've commanded a few sims, but I found that it's more fun being just a regular character. I have a little experience in chat sims, but only a little. Was searching through the Simming League one day, found out about this site, and figured it was about time I earn some more experience in chat. So here I am.

Just as a side note, my occupation and life experience might cause me to write my characters on the 'overly cautious' (over-suspicious) side of things (we call it hypervigiliance; if you expect to make it home every night, you'd better suspect every worst case scenario). But if, as a GM, my characters' 'over-caution' gets on your nerves, just Gibbs-smack me and tell me where to go. I promise I don't write that way to intentionally mess with your stories. I subscribe to the principle of writing from experience, and 'over-caution' is just a trained habit. But I can write a Barney Fife if you want.

I've been through two academies as of now; looking forward to the next. See you there and happy posting!

My Calestorm is the Gibbs-smack type, so no worries there. ;)

Coming from a different on line RP background is usually a no brainer as our Live Chat set up actually incorporates all aspects of the on line role play communities. The Advanced games cover different Star Trek eras, so whatever your "Trek Flavor" is, you can find a ship that has the right fit.

- The Academy's are obviously set up to get new Players used to what we do, and the GM's are there to guide. If you pull a phaser during a First Contact situation and go all Rambo? Yep, prolly not going to graduate any time soon.

- The Player is graduated and posts to one of the Advanced Sims. We meet every week in chat and take part in an ongoing or one shot adventure. The Fan Fic writings continue the plot from the perspective of the officers and crew.

- Email strings are used per individual ships/games to keep in contact and distribute any information or logs among the crew.

Have fun and see ya around the galaxy!

Welcome to STSF, Mr. Silver. Over-cautious or Barney Fife? Your choice, once you graduate from the academy and are posted to an advanced sim. In the academies, as Cale mentioned, the GMs are there to lead, to guide, and to watch for several things:

  • following action statements
  • playing within the chain of command
  • adding to the sim in a creative way without going outside the parameters the GMs set up
  • playing as part of a team, not a grandstanding individual

Since you have experience elsewhere, you should have no problem playing in our little corner of space. Best thing to do - play away and enjoy yourself. GMs will rein you in if need be.

Q'plah!

Thanks for the welcome! I'll keep your advice in mind. Hope to have a prosperous 'career' here, so long as I can maintain it.

Luckily, I haven't been abused by the local, corrupt sheriff, yet. ;)

No, ma'am; I only pull my sidearm when I need to, and I prefer it when I don't. But over-caution does mean I'm instinctively inclined not to trust unknown people (even if I don't actually suspect them of ulterior motives at first), and always prepare for the possible worst case that I can imagine. It's become second-nature to run a lot of 'what ifs' through my head all day long, and approach every situation from that stand-point -- I don't let contacts get too close or out of sight, and tend to be suspicious of everything they do. Put me in a post that's similar to what I normally do (like SEC), and I'll tend to write it that way. But as it did with the last academy, I discovered that instinct might go beyond what GMs want, so I figured I'd forewarn the rest.

And possibly bring a helmet. :)

Note to self: Barney Fife = bad idea. LOL Guess I'm still trying to learn the bigger lessons here.
