I just graduated...

68 posts in this topic

it was fun and unexpexted...getting my pip and now I am an ensign!!!  Yea for me!   :D

But now that I have graduated and am looking at the ships and the summary of the ships.....How do I choose.  They all seem like great choices.  Another question is if you start with one posting can you ever switch if there is an opening?  And lastly, when you start how does a new recruit fit into the storyline.

If anyone has any suggestions on choosing or a little ridbit for the different ship please share...

Thank you all,

Anika

Dropping in on the ships that you are interested on joining would be a good idea, so you can get a feel for how the different ships function. Also you would want to find a ship that can fit in with your real life schedule.  If there is a specific posting you want then it would be a good idea to find out what ships have openings in that area before applying for a ship.

Yes, Bat'ok has the right idea.  You might want to see what sims fit into your Real Life schedule best and drop in and watch a night or two.  Talk to the CO and XO about the plots and the "style" of the ship/station.  You will get a notice from Personnel letting you know what posts are available on what sims.  As far as transferring between depts, that's up to each sim's Command staff and definitely a question worth asking if, let's say, you want an Eng post, but they only had Sci openeings when you join.  Most, if not all, Captains will let you transfer between departments if that's what would make you happy.

Good luck and WELCOME!

When I got my letter from Personnel, I checked out what time the sims meet. (This is also on the Schedule page.) Once I figured out what times I could meet, I sat in on the sims, and watched. I watched intently - I knew what was going on in every department the entire game. And, I must say, I'm glad I did.

I eventually ended up picking Aegis as my first post. Friday night was the best night for me, and Aegis had an opening in Engineering. So, it all worked out for me.

You do have to realize, however, that most of the ships in STSF are almost full. I'm on two ships - they both are quickly running out of posts on board. So, depending on your schedule and which ship you decide to join, you may not get the post of your choice. But, as Atragon said, most (of not all) CO's will allow you to switch departments is a position in the department you want opens. But, make sure your CO knows you want to switch departments when an opening occurs. Otherwise, the CO may make the opening public, and you could lose the position before you even knew it was open.

I'm sure that you will have fun on any ship that you join. They each have their own unique factor to them.

There are other factors that may help you decide which ship to join. Which Star Trek series do you like best? Take the answer to that question, and place yourself in it. Would you like it? If so, then ask around to see which ship is most like your favorite series. (I did the complete opposite, actually. I joined Aegis, the only Station in STSF. I have seen only one episode of DS9. :) )

But, in the end, it's all for fun. So, whichever ship you join, have fun with it. :D

Once you know what times fit with your schedule, the best advice I have is to watch the sims that fit. If you have a few problems, then talk to members of the crew, especially the CO/XO, and dept head of the dept you want.

I never planned on science, but it was the only opening on the Arcadia when I started. So I took it, and although I was only there for a month or two, it has provided a few interesting twists for my character over the years. I am not the science or engineering type, but both times I created Ziggy he played one or the other.

I don't advise jumping on more than one ship to start. Give yourself time to create and play one character, at least long enough that you feel comforatable and realize the time committment involved in an advanced sim before jumping in to another.

Welcome to the ranks of the graduated!

Everything that people said above is true.  Find a place that fits into your real life schedule, that has openings where you're interested, and where you think you'll fit in to the crew.

Good luck!

Congrats on your well deserved promotion! :)  Wherever you decided to go, I'm sure they'll be glad to have you.

Of course, picking a simulation with a GromVik character is highly encouraged and recommended!  ::D:

Of course, if do the math you are much more likely to end up on a ship with a Garnoopy over a Grommie.

And don't worry Ziggy, you're a fine tactical officer. Though, I think you should apply for CENG of the Aegis, I hear that their Chief is in need of some good tactical skills.

Anika.....here, going to make it really easy.

On application, fill in all blanks with either

RES Talon or USS Republic

Got it now Grom?

Don't forget your towel and your Hitchhiker's Guide!

The two bumper stickers on Arcadia:

We stop for hitchhikers.

We brake for Moose.

(We do have an open science post if you're interested.  :D  )

RES Talon

Who wants to be on a sim where everyone talks funny anyway?

I'm just trying to make it easier for the new Ensign to make the correct choice.  Confusing her with inferior simulations does not help in that process.  :D

But Grommie,

Suggesting she be on a sim with you IS suggesting an inferior sim. Now the Arcadia on the other hand... :D

::still has the phasers in line with Grom:::

Now the Arcadia on the other hand... has a Garnoopy! What more does one need?
