A science and engineering team has been sent by shuttle from the USS Caliban to investigate the small jungle planetoid Deraka for prospects as a potential mining colony. While conducting low-altitude flybys, the shuttle was caught in a torrential rainstorm and suffered massive equipment failure after being struck just off the port wing by a lightning bolt, and has just crashed spectacularly into the jungle underbrush.
