Prior Knowledge

Hello,

I recently found STSF.net and am interested in joining, but I am hesitant. I was wondering what knowledge of Star Trek is needed to be able to participate in a sim. I'm a big fan of The Original Series and have started to try and watch the other series as often as I can, but I have really only managed to watch a good portion of TNG.

Would I be lost if I tried to participate without more knowledge from the other series? I like browsing Memory Alpha, but of course that isn't quite the same as watching the episodes.

Thanks,

T'Pike

TPike,

That's a great question. Allow me. When I first arrived I felt the same way. I grew up watching TOS with my parents but didn't delve into TNG too much. I have little or no knowlege besides TOS and the New TOS movie. However, the members here @ STSF are more than willing and able to help any newcomers along with Trek fun facts and knowlege. Whatever you don't know and would like to know just ask. Either by post or in chat. So, to answer your question.. no you don't need to be a Trek "know it all" to sim here. You just have to be willing to participate, have fun and learn along the way. Hope that answered your question! Catch you on the bridge!

TPike:

Welcome to STSF! Glad you want to check us out. :)

Players of all levels of Trek experience are welcome to play...and trust me, you'll pick a lot up if you play for a while, too. :D Feel free to stop by one of the academies; I look forward to seeing you around the games! :)

Welcome to STSF; this is a great site to RPG and Sim on.

To add to Dray and Kent's answers: a good number of the Sims here do their own Star Trek continuity within the larger universe, not necessarily always using established characters or events. We all have our own plots and good guys and bad guys that would/could be employed for an adventure, and these things are played out alongside the shows and characters that we know and are familiar with.

You'll be fine with your current level of Trek knowledge and stuff; all levels and ages are welcome!

While deep Trek knowledge isn't essential, you'll be amazed at how much you can pick up over the course of simming. Sometimes, if a particular plotline delves into Trek lore, the hosts will prompt the crew by suggesting they look at a particular episode, movie, or Memory Alpha subjects. And some positions just don't need require as much history or technobabble. One can survive as a happy-go-lucky security officer with little more knowledge than which end of the phaser to point where ... and which end to avoid.

If the scope of the later Trek canon looms too large, you can always consider STSF Advanced Sims set it the TOS era. Hood is classic TOS, Challenger is late TOS movies, and Commanche Creek is New TOS (Abramsverse). You can always ease into later eras over time.

Do na worry. Unlike we Rihannsu, most of Lloann'mhrahel and most assuredly the Khell'oann-mhehorael are weak of mind and anything they do know, is na really worth us bothering with. So, as au see, it is ok na to know too much! :D

T'Pike,

Unlike the esteemed "Rihannsu" Commanding Officer claims we members of the UFOP are a lot more knowledgeable than she'd like to admit. Furthermore, if the Romulans even possessed knowledge worth bothering with - they'd build ships that would serve a purpose other than providing us Federation Officers with something to laugh at. :D

( This was a rp response )

And when in doubt, spout a bit of Rihannsu and technobabble and you'll fit right in!

Welcome, T'Pike. I'm sure you'll have no problem adapting.

One more bit: Coming in "knowing too much" often doesn't help because you want to see the solution in something someone else did on the TV show. Simming isn't a memory contest, and some of the most interesting simming comes when the story and solution are completely new.
