Breakfast Together

Three days out from the USS Republic, Kania and the security officer Foster switch places. Kania had just completed her shift in piloting while Foster had slept. Now it was time for Kania to spend some time with her daughter. Rian and the Admiral had seen to customizing the larger of the shuttles to allow Kania to have her daughter and her nanny with her rather than having leaving them back on the ship.

 

Kania relinquished her seat to the security officer giving him orders to remain on course and continue scans for any vessels long the way. She turned and walked back to the divided quarters and entered her's where Schawana still slept. She sat down on the side of the bed next to her child. She sat there for several moments just looking down at the child and wondering if it was a good idea for her to remain on board instead of leaving her on either Bajore or on Earth at the Youth Academy. Kania had tears well up in her eyes as she came to the thought. She couldn't fathom leaving her child behind.

 

Schawana stretches her arms above her head straight as well as her legs. She yawns and opens her eyes seeing her mom looming above her but with tears in her eyes. She sits up asking, "Mommy? Why are you crying? What's wrong?" She then stands up in the bed and wraps her arms around Kania's neck. "Mommy I love you."

 

Kania wiped her eyes and wrapped her arms around her child. "I'm fine and I love you too Schawana. I love you too."

 

Schawana slightly pushes back, "Then Mommy why are you crying? Do you miss the Republic?"

 

Kania let out a smile. "I guess you could say that. I miss all of the activity and all of the people. Come on lets go get breakfast." Kania lifted her daughter out of bed and set her on the floor. "Lets get cleaned up first Schawana, to the bathroom with you. After breakfast we are going to do some school work."

 

Schawana ran to the bathroom and stood on her stool so she could reach the sink. She began washing her face. "Mommy Why do I have to do school work. I thought we were on vacation."

 

"No we are not on vacation. We are actually on a mission of a sort. We are out here looking for a ship that can go back and help the Republic get to a Star Base so it can be repaired. I have work that I have to do and you young lady have to do your school work." Kania then comes up behind Schawana begins tickling her and the two laugh heartily. "Ok let's go get breakfast and then you can brush your teeth."

 

"OK Mommy. What are we having?" Schawana say drying her face off with the towel.

 

"Well? We can have Earths bacon and eggs, Or Waffles, or pancakes, or Peanut butter and Jelly..."

 

"GRAPE Jelly? Can I have grape Jelly?? Please??" Schawana asks hurrying to the table.

 

Kania laughs a bit. "Yes if you want you can have Grape Jelly."

 

"That's what I want mommy I want Peanut butter and Grape jelly. Oh can I have toast?"

 

Kania cringed at the sound of that word. She remembered back when all of the replicaters flooded the rooms with the article mentioned. "Yes Schawana you can." Kania looks around to see if she was going to have toast being tossed at her. Not seeing anything happening she fixed Schawana her favorite breakfast. She then fixed herself a more traditional Bajoran breakfast of Groatcake and had it covered with syrup of squill, and a piece of Moba fruit.

 

As the two sat down for breakfast Schawana comes up with a question. "Mommy, how long are we going to be gone from the Republic? I miss playing with my friends."

 

Kania didn't know how to answer. She wanted to be able to give her daughter the answer she was looking for. But she couldn't. "I'm sorry hun, I don't have that answer. We have to finish our mission first. we have to find help for the Ship and her crew. That's why Auntie Blu sent us out here. The ship can't move very fast and its up to us to get help."

 

Schawana nodded while she ate her toast sandwich. "Woekay Mommy, whut do I ::swallows :: have to do school work?"

 

"You do if you want to grow up and be in fleet like mommy and Auntie Blu. School work is very important." Kania says before she takes another bite.

 

"Okay Mommy if I can be like Auntie Blu, Ill do it. I want to be dadmiral like She is."

 

Kania chuckles a bit. "She's an Admiral honey."

 

"That's what I said," Schawana says as she wipes the jelly off her mouth on her napkin.

 

"OK go brush your teeth and we will get started on some school work." Kania watched as Schawana trotted off to the bathroom once more. She sat back in her chair sipping at her Deka tea.
