I Am So Y'Ya When I Get Home, Part 4

“Na!” Morgana took another look at Lai. “Na, na, na, na,na, na!”

“Why na?” Lai looked wounded.

“Because I all ready have a…a boyfriend.” Morgana protested. She scanned Lai from head to toe and back again, clearly finding him lacking in some category or another. In Sienae’s opinion, the maenak must have good taste to be rejecting Lai so thoroughly.

“Well, now au have re,” Lai smirked, throwing his arm over the maenak’s shoulder.

“Na, na, na, na, na,” Morgana picked up his arm by the cufflink and pulled it off her shoulder like toxic waste. “I can na do that to my family or Maec. This will never work. There has to be another option.”

“Oh the Kheinsa won’t mind. He knows it gets lonely…all that time in space.”

The maenak fixed Lai with a death stare so severe that Sienae was afraid she’d unholster her disruptor at any moment. Sensing trouble on the horizon, Aerv took the maenak by the arm and led her just out of Lai and Sienae’s earshot, cautioning the other two agents with a flip of his wrist to stay away. Sienae watched the animated and clearly heated conversation taking place. Meanwhile, Lai leaned his hip against the countertop, popping chips into his mouth one by one as if he was watching a stage show.

“What do you think they’re saying?” Lai asked.

“Probably assessing your lack of personal hygiene.”

“Funny, I thought they were talking about your stoic stick-up-the-backend nature.”

“Careful, they’re coming back.”

Repulsed was a good way to describe the maenak’s expression as she rejoined the group. “Touch me again and I will neuter au. Without benefit of a sharp knife.” She snarled directly at Lai.

“I’m sorry a’rhea*, I will have to touch au sometime.” Lai smiled innocently. “Well, if this is to work.” Another death stare shot in his direction. Only the quelling hand of Aerv on the maenak’s shoulder kept the impending bloodshed at bay.

“What do au want me to do next?” Morgana asked through gritted teeth.

“For today, just wander the streets looking distressed. Tomorrow, the café.” Aerv instructed. “And be menkha, I don’t want any io to y’ya on this mission.”

“I’ll be menkha.” Lai protested.

“I was talking to her, na au. I don’t want her y’yaing in your sleep.” Aerv smirked as he escorted Sienae out the door. The last thing Sienae saw was the troubled expression on Lai's face and the death stare the maenak fixed on the younger man.

They crossed the hall and entered the lift to rejoin the surveillance team on the floor above. She waited a few beats after the lift doors closed before she turned to her ranking officer. “Why did we na just let the Tal Shiar take over? Why fight t’Prin over this?”

“Because they would na care of she lives or dies in the course of this operation.”

“Why do au?” Sienae arched her brow.

“Because she cared whether or na an old dheno lived or died.” The older man examined his prosthetic hand, his face softening. “Now I’m returning the favor.”

*a’rehea – dear heart.
