Always In Trouble

“What do you mean he’s dead?”

Vice-Admiral Misha Abronvonvich was incredulous and somewhere between shock and disbelief.

“I thought it was a pretty static term,” Corizon said dryly.

“I know what the hell the word means; just how did he die…”

“Won’t know till the tox report comes back.”

For a long moment silence engulfed the commlink. “Captain. Ah-Windu, can you seriously not go twenty minutes without causing or being part of a major diplomatic incident? Is that possible for you?”

Stoic, Corizon remained impassive. “It certainly wasn’t my intent.”

“You set this whole thing up!”

“If you’re referring to the meeting with Ambassador tr’Lon,” he said, “that is correct. I did arrange the meeting, but only after you, the admiralty, and ATAG approved of it.”

“Don’t remind me.”

“I find it prudent to do so, sir, when an accusatory finger is jabbed my way.”

“Is this how you’ve kept your job so long?”

“Excuse me?”

“You’re one slick SOB.”

“I have been accused of that before,” Corizon said slyly as the tension finally defused.

“Have the Romulans been informed?”

“Ambassador Joy…”

“Oh for the love of god.”

“Sir?”

“Of all the people … the space robot lawyer.”

“Android, sir.”

“Whatever.”

Abronvonvich’s craggy face contorted further as the thought coalesced. “Well at least she’ll keep them busy. God the ######’s going to hit the fan back home when they hear about this, you know that right?”

Corizon lifted an ear and raised an eyebrow. “I wasn’t exactly aware that I’d done anything against regulations.”

“No,” Abronvonvich said with a labored patience. “But you know that when it comes to this sort of thing, being a pain in the ass to elected officials can sometimes be worse for an officer’s career than breaking rules.”

“Politics,” Corizon said with a growl, “is something I have even less time for than diplomacy.”

“Yet I find you constantly engaged in both.”

“I think I am insulted.”

“I am sure you are. Listen, I’ll pass the word along to Command and see what they say. Go ahead and start investigating, keep me apprised.”
